Heat & Forecast ~ Picture of the Day ~ Ball Point Pens ~ Corn on the Cob with Bacon & Herbed Butter ~ My Version of Southern Style Macaroni Salad ~ National Caviar Day

Good 52º clear sunny morning. A bit of smoke in the air from the local fires. I just got an "air quality warning" on my cell phone.

Yesterday the heat was at 91º at noon, 103º at 3pm, 106º at 4pm, and 107º at 5pm.

Here is the forecast....

Interesting about ball point pens......
ballpoint pen, also known as a biro or ball pen, is a pen that dispenses ink (usually in paste form) over a metal ball at its point, i.e. over a "ball point". The metal commonly used is steelbrass, or tungsten carbide. It was conceived and developed as a cleaner and more reliable alternative to dip pens and fountain pens, and it is now the world's most-used writing instrument:millions are manufactured and sold daily. As a result, it has influenced art and graphic design and spawned an artwork genre.

The Bic Cristal is a popular disposable type of ballpoint pen whose design is recognized by its place in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Gimbel's Department Store ran big ads all over the New York the day before they first offered this new writing instrument for sale. The ballpoint pen came with a guarantee to write for two years without needing a refill. The store was a madhouse, with people scrambling over each other to get their own ballpoint pen. The store's initial offering of 10,000 pens, going for $12.50 each, sold out by the end of the day. Two Hungarian brothers were the first to invent the ballpoint pen and produce them in their factory in Australia. The ballpoint was first patented by John Loud in the U.S. in 1888, but he never actually produced any pens. Today, ballpoint pens generate annual sales of nearly $21 billion.

Corn on the Cob with Bacon and Herbed Butter

Bring home the bacon and wrap some corn on the cob with the smoky flavors that are all the rage today. Our novel-tasting Corn on the Cob with Bacon and Herbed Butter will have everyone smiling from ear to ear!

  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 4 garlic cloves, pressed
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried dillweed
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 ears fresh corn, husks removed
  • 12 fully cooked slices bacon
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped

  1. In a small bowl, combine butter, garlic, dillweed, black pepper, and salt. Rub butter mixture evenly over ears of corn. Cut each ear in half.

  2. Wrap each half with 1 slice of bacon, and secure with wooden toothpicks. Place corn in a single layer in a 5-quart slow cooker (see Note). Add broth and bell pepper.

  3. Cover and cook on LOW setting 3 hours or until corn is tender. Remove bacon before serving, if desired.

Note

If all the ears of corn won't fit in a single layer in your slow cooker, it's okay to stack a few; they'll still cook.

The heat has totally taken away my energy. Best I can do is minimum. I did make that Southern Style Macaroni Salad from yesterday's blog. But, I changed a number of things from the recipe.

I didn't want onion so I used chopped garlic instead.

No Miracle Whip, just BF Mayo and some BF Organic Spicy Chipotle Mayo, tuna, lots of celery. I also used 5 hard boiled eggs chopped instead of 3.

After I got it all in the bowl I didn't use as much mayonnaise as called for. I put in a couple of large spoonfuls of the regular mayo and of the chipotle mayo.

Then after doing the taste test, I wanted more flavor so I added in a pack of chopped salmon.

This was good now. I put a few servings in a refrigerator bowl and the rest into zip lock freezer bags and put them in the freezer.

Yes you can freeze macaroni (or any pasta) salad.

So, dinner was some Macaroni Salad and an Omaha Steaks Home-style Individual Meatloaf.  OMGOOD!!!

All I know. Nuff said. Happy Hump Day. Ciao.

On July 18 recognize a seafood delicacy with roe on toast.  It’s National Caviar Day!
In simple terms, caviar is Sturgeon fish eggs.  There are several species of Sturgeon fish.  As a result, the caviar produced varies in colors depending on the species.  Caviar is full of protein and vitamins making the delicacy a healthy meal.
The United States was the leading distributor of caviar around the year 1900 producing over 600 tons a year.  However, due to the over-harvesting of Sturgeon fish for the caviar, a ban was put in place to protect the Sturgeon fish from becoming extinct.  The population has never recovered sufficiently since the ban, resulting in caviar’s continued status as a luxury item.
**Mmmmmmmm I LOVE caviar! Haven't had any in a very long time though.

Oh goodness your salad looks so yummy! Last night I fixed a side dish, Suddenly Salad. It was bow tie pasta with bacon chipotle dressing. Eric had given us two boxes as he didn't like it. I was surprised that my guys really liked it.

The only time I had caviar was at Judy's that time when E, L and I went there for lunch. Judy had just gotten home from her Russian trip and brought that orange caviar. LOL I thought it was marmalade so I slathered it on bread, took a bite and about choked! I gave to E and she loved it. Too fishy for me.

XOXO Trisha

Thanks for the note T. Caviar like many things, takes a taste for it. Like sushi and other things. Bacon chipotle dressing sounds good. xo
