Smoke ~ Turkey Mommas & Babies ~ Throw Back Thursday ~ LAPD Motor Cop Stops Celeb ~ Picture of the Day ~ Anytime Fried Rice ~ Postal Carrier Problem ~ National Book Lovers Day

Good 60º super smokey morning.

Yesterday the smoke was a little less.... At least my mountain was visible for most of the morning and early afternoon! We topped at 97º.

Then by later in the afternoon my mountain disappeared again!

I looked out back and there was a couple mommas and their babies.... one standing in the water tub drinking!

Happy Throw Back Thursday
1980 my stint with UPS......

Having a few friends in LE and hearing some good stories, this one from a high school pal who was with LAPD....

A motor cop friend of mine who stopped a guy for throwing a lit cigar out of his veh window on Coldwater Canyon.....to his surprise it was Jack Benny......Benny said , “now officer you know my reputation for being a tightwad.....do you really think  I’d throw away a perfectly good cigar?”....lol , no cite.

You don't have to be serving up a complete Chinese dinner to serve fried rice. And with no egg and minimal oil, Anytime Fried Rice is a 1-2-3 throw-together that's quick and ready to go in no time at all. This fried rice without egg is a dinner winner!

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cups cold cooked white rice, rinsed
  • 1 (10-ounce) package frozen peas, thawed
  • 3 scallions, sliced
  • 1/3 cup light soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add rice and stir-fry 10 minutes.
Add peas and scallions and continue to stir-fry 1 minute. Add remaining ingredients; mix well.

Reduce heat to medium-low and cook 2 to 3 minutes, or until thoroughly mixed and heated through.

Notes

  • Using moist, cold rice helps to give your Anytime Fried Rice that authentic crisp fried rice texture and flavor. This is a great way to get rid of leftover rice!

  • This is a recipe for fried rice without egg, but if you prefer you can always add a scrambled egg to the finished dish (as pictured).

Noonish I made a run into town and as I left my place a couple of boxes (USPS sent) and some of my mail was laying on the ground by my gate! Wednesday Thursday Friday???? In my mailbox was some mail left earlier and a note to pick up a package at the PO with yesterday's date. I'm guessing the mail by my gate was left on Tuesday (or Monday?). I raised heqq at the PO and the gal told me they have a new carrier and she's just learning. So I filled out a form to have any packages held at the PO and NOT to leave them sitting by my gate out in the weather!!! DUH. Why in the heqq the mail was left with the packages is a puzzlement. Why wasn't it put in the mailbox????? Sigh..........

I also stopped at the market for some butter flavor cake mix and since they didn't have peach pie filling, I got sliced canned peaches like Greg said he used in the peach cake. I will make that today.

Dinner was Schwans breaded chicken bites, frozen to oven or microwave. I had some fresh broccoli I tossed with olive oil and some garlic salt, put in air fryer with a bit of water in the bottom to steam, 350º for 8 minutes..... still crunchy and with a roasted bit on the edges! A little Swiss cheese and some ranch dipping sauce.... YUMMMMO!

All I know. Nuff said. Happy TBT. Ciao.

National Book Lovers Day harnesses all the excitement bibliophiles feel about books into one celebration on August 9th.
A day for all those who love to read, National Book Lovers Day encourages you to find your favorite reading place, a good book (whether it be fiction or non-fiction) and read the day away.
Bibliophile – a person who has a great appreciation for or collects books.
Step back in time
  • The very first books used parchment or vellum (calf skin) for the book pages.
  • The book covers were made of wood and often covered with leather.
  • The books were fitted with clasps or straps.
  • Public libraries appeared in the Middle Ages.
  • Public libraries often chained the books to a shelf or a desk to prevent theft.
Moving forward
Along with several recent developments, book manufacturers use digital printing.  Book pages are printed using toner rather than ink.  As a result of digital printing, print-on-demand opens up a whole new realm of publishing. In this case, distributors don’t print the books until the customer places the order.
More and more, people read E-books. E-book (electronic book) refers to a book-length publication in digital form.  They are usually available through the internet. However, they can also be found on CD-ROM and other systems.  Read an E-book on a computer or via a portable book display device known as an e-book reader, such as a Reader, Nook or Kindle.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Sit back, relax and READ! Don’t forget to share the joy of reading with the young people in your life. Inspire them with your favorite novel or find out about the last book they took off the shelf. Read to the littlest of the up and coming readers.
