Several inquiries re the black rice... Wikipeida says:Black rice, also known as purple rice or forbidden rice, is a kind of sticky rice which is one of several black colored heirloom plants producing rice variants such as Indonesian black rice and Thai Jasmine Black Rice. Black rice is high in nutritional value and contains 18 amino acids, iron, zinc, copper, carotene, anthocyanin and several important vitamins. The grain has a similar amount of fiber to brown rice and like brown rice, has a mild, nutty taste. In China, black rice is claimed to be good for kidney, stomach and liver; these claims have not been independently verified or established. It is a deep black color and turns deep purple when cooked. Its dark purple color is primarily due to its anthocyanin content, but the anthocyanin content in black rice is significantly lower than blue, pink or purple corn. It is suitable for making porridge and it can also be used for making dessert, traditional Chinese black rice cake, bread and so on.
In China, noodles made from black rice have recently begun to be produced. At least one United States bread company has also begun producing "Chinese Black Rice" bread. It shares the deep tyrian color of cooked black rice

And this from my friend Trish Bowler....

Today is the Vernal Equinox.....An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth's equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name "equinox" is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day have approximately equal length.

At an equinox, the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere where the celestial equator (i.e. declination 0) and ecliptic intersect. These points of intersection are called equinoctial points: classically, the vernal point and the autumnal point. By extension, the term equinox may denote an equinoctial point.
An equinox happens each year at two specific moments in time (rather than two whole days), when there is a location (the subsolar point) on the Earth's equator, where the center of the Sun can be observed to be vertically overhead, occurring around March 20 and September 22 each year.

On this date my friend Sandy (Todoran.. Wilson S'63) married Jerome Beck in 1982. Happy Anniversary kids!

March 20th
National Ravioli Day

Fried Ravioli is AWESOME!

Olive oil , for frying
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups Italian-style breadcrumbs
1 pkg ready made ravioli from the refrigerated section (or frozen, but not dried)
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 to 2 cups marinara sauce , heated, for dipping
Heat 2 inches of olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat until a deep-fry thermometer registers 325°.
While the oil is heating, put the buttermilk and the breadcrumbs in separate shallow bowls. Working in batches, dip the ravioli in the buttermilk to coat completely, allowing the excess buttermilk to drip back into the bowl. Dredge the ravioli in the bread crumbs. Place the ravioli on a baking sheet, while you coat the remaining ravioli.
When the oil is hot, fry the ravioli in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fried ravioli to paper towels to drain.
Sprinkle the fried ravioli with Parmesan cheese and serve with a bowl of warmed marinara sauce for dipping.
