Weather ~ Picture of the Day ~ Outhouse ~ Cheesy Stuffed Meatloaf ~ Adele Graves ~ Gary Adkison ~ National Scrabble Day

Good 37º raining morning.

Yesterday we had rain on and off and topped at 49º.

It's crazy weather for April. My friend Vivia in New York told me that when she lived in Colorado in 1974 it snowed in July!!!

Interesting about who invented the outhouse

Bowel movement being a basic universal need, it’s easy to imagine how the man who invented the outhouse came up with the idea. But who was the first latrine maker?

Prehistoric Times
Defecation in ancient times is thought to have been done indiscriminately. Prehistoric men released human waste anywhere in the forest. But soon, as the idea of privacy was beginning to take shape in their minds, they began to do it in isolation in caves. This was the crudest form of an outhouse by the first latrine maker or makers. Some studies estimate this to have happened about the same time when man learned to dress up.

Today we take for granted all the conveniences of a modern day toilet complete with running water, flushing loos and warm carpet tiles under our feet in winter.

But the problem of available space in the latrine caves soon started troubling our ancient ancestors. Thus, probably for convenience sake, they started digging holes for the purpose and partly refilling it with earth to make it reusable by others. Then, as refilling reached the level of the ground, they dug another site.

As they advanced in living standards, people started living in constructed shelters of wood and thick canvas, and much later, wood and stone. The idea of communities also began to propagate. About that time, caves were too isolated and dangerous to continue serving the defecation needs of the people. The person or persons who invented the outhouse came up with the idea at this time.

It Really Started in China
The earliest record of a water closet system was in China. A stone toilet bowl with a water system was found to have been used in 206 B.C. Thus, the first latrine maker and the person who invented the outhouse could well have been a Chinese who lived around this time.

Outhouses in Europe
Some experts estimate that the first outhouse in Europe was used some 500 years ago. In fact, they also assert that the man who invented the outhouse was a European. Fifteenth and sixteenth century Europeans started enjoying the convenience of outhouses then instead of doing the human urge in remote places where digging and refilling were done countless times through the year. Latrines were yet unhygienic to keep inside houses as long as the U-trap and water closet were not yet invented.

What Were Outhouses?~
When people back then had the urge to relieve themselves of human waste, they went to a roofed cubicle about 50 to 100 yards away from their houses. It was about 3 by 5 feet in area and stood some 7 feet tall. It had no windows and light. On the center of the floor was a hole and inside it was a tin bowl for catching waste. Each morning, the tin bowl was replaced. The person or people who invented the outhouse had to assign someone for the daily and messy chore.

Outhouses were in use in cities of developed countries (e.g. Australia) well into the second half of the twentieth century. They are still common in rural areas and also in cities of developing countries. Outhouses that are covering pit latrines in densely populated areas can cause groundwater pollution.

From Mr. Food

Anything stuffed with cheese is bound to be a hit, and that goes for our simply awesome Cheesy Stuffed Meatloaf. Our Test Kitchen really knocked themselves out to make this delicious novel meatloaf recipe look like you fussed; but only you'll know what a cinch it is.

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 3 slices white bread, torn into small pieces
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 scallions, sliced
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce, divided

  1. Preheat oven to 350º. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

  2. In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, bread, eggs, mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix with your hands until well blended. Place on a 12- x 16-inch piece of wax paper and pat firmly into a 10- x 12-inch rectangle.

  3. In a small bowl, combine cheese and scallions; mix well. Sprinkle cheese mixture evenly over ground beef. Roll up jelly roll-style, starting from the short end, by lifting wax paper and removing the paper as you roll. Seal ends well. Place seam-side down in prepared baking dish.

  4. Pour half of barbecue sauce over beef roll and bake 45 minutes. Remove from oven, pour remaining sauce over roll, and return to oven 10 to 15 minutes, or until no pink remains. Remove from oven and allow to stand 10 minutes. Slice and serve.

***It's always a good idea to let your meatloaf sit for at least 10 minutes before slicing it up for eatin'! It's the easiest way to get the most perfect-looking meatloaf slices!

All I know. Nuff said. Have a good Wednesday. Ciao.

Each year on National Scrabble Day April 13th recognizes a game played around the world. Originally named Lexiko and then Criss-Cross Words, Alfred Mosher Butts eventually settled on the name Scrabble. The amateur artist and unemployed architect developed the word game in the midst of the depression. Still, it wasn’t until 1948, a final name change and a trademark that Butts finally began to produce the game.
Scrabble is played with two to four players who score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a game board marked with a 15 x 15 grid.
In the United States, the name Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro, Inc. Scrabble is sold in 121 countries with 29 different language versions. Worldwide, over One hundred and fifty million sets have been sold with sets being found in nearly one-third of American homes.
  • 1984 – Scrabble became a daytime game show on NBC
  • 2004 – Scrabble was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame
  • Some cities sponsor Scrabble tournaments on the weekend closest to National Scrabble Day
  • The word “scrabble” means to “grope frantically.”

HOW TO OBSERVE

Call your friends and play a game or two of Scrabble! Mix it up, too. There are several ways to play the game if you want to change things up a bit. For example, if you’re spending time alone, Scrabble solitaire challenges you at your own game of words. Another version allows players to only play nouns but they earn bonus points for playing nouns that are both a proper noun and an approved Scrabble word.

NATIONAL SCRABBLE DAY HISTORY

National Scrabble Day commemorates the birth of Alfred Mosher Butts, born on April 13, 1899. However, our research had not identified the founder of the day.
