Weather ~ Picture of the Day ~ Lincoln's Beard ~ Five Star Pumpkin Bread ~ National Sunglasses Day

Good 54º clear sunny morning.

Yesterday we topped at 107º!

Picture of the Day..... funny business name 😁

Interesting about Lincoln's beard........
From a letter sent from a young girl, aged eleven, our 16th President changed his image and grew an iconic beard. Her name was Grace Bedell, (November 4, 1848 - November 2, 1936).
On October 15, 1860, a few weeks before Lincoln was elected President of the United States, Grace sent him a letter from Westfield, New York, urging him to grow a beard to improve his appearance. Lincoln responded in a letter on October 19, 1860, making no promises.
What prompted her to make this suggestion? After viewing a picture of candidate Lincoln that her father brought home, she noted his high forehead over his sadly pathetic eyes, the angular lower face with the deep cut lines about his mouth. “As I regarded the picture, I said to my mother, ‘He would look better if he wore whiskers, and I mean to tell him so.’”.

Shortly after this exchange, Lincoln allowed his beard to grow. By the time he began his inaugural journey from Illinois to Washington, DC by train, he had a full beard. The trip took him through the state of New York, and included a stop in Bedell’s hometown of Westfield, New York, where thousands gathered to meet the president-elect. There, Lincoln asked to meet Grace Bedell.
Bedell recalled the event some years later in a personal interview. “He climbed down and sat down with me on the edge of the station platform” she said. “Gracie, look at my whiskers. I have been growing them for you”, Lincoln stated. “Then he kissed me. I never saw him again”.

  • 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

  1. Preheat oven to 350º. Coat two 9- x 5-inch loaf pans with cooking spray.

  2. In a large bowl, beat sugar, cream cheese, and butter until well blended. Add pumpkin and eggs and beat until well mixed.

  3. Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and cloves. Beat until well blended. Pour batter evenly into loaf pans.

Celebrated each year on June 27th, National Sunglasses Day gains popularity each year. Organizations like The Vision Council is one of the reasons. They inform people about the dangers of UV exposure and why wearing sunglasses should be more than to just make a fashion statement. So in honor of the holiday—and to help you pick out a pair of your own—we present the top 10 sunglasses styles that stand the test of time.
Prada Model SPR07F

Most known for their appearance in the 1963 Academy Award-winning Italian film 8 ½, these glasses are anything but old-fashioned. Prada first introduced the design as Prada model SPR07F, but the design has undergone some changes since the 60s. Regardless, these sunglasses might be one of the only designs that can not only be worn with a suit, but that makes a suit look so good.
Persol 714

The original folding glasses, the Persol 714 sunglasses debuted in the 1960s when the iconic actor Steve McQueen wore them in the film The Thomas Crown Affair. These glasses were based on the Persol 649 model. However, the adaptations included 10 additional manufacturing steps to allow them to fold. In 2006, a pair of Persol 714s from McQueen’s personal collection were auctioned off at nearly $70,000. Get suave with aperhaps less expensivepair for National Sunglasses Day.
Ray-Ban 3138 Shooter

While Johnny Depp was not the first to wear these yellow-tinted aviator shooters, he made them famous the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The sunglasses have a small circle between the lenses. Some say the circle aids in hunting or shooting. The style was regularly worn by Hunter S. Thompson, the author of the novel that inspired the film. Shooters also come in different color tints.
Ray-Ban Wayfarer
National Sunglasses Day June 27
At their introduction in 1956, Ray-Ban’s Wayfarers revolutionary plastic frame made the design almost instantly popular. The design was a distinct diversion from the metal-framed sunglasses that were popular at the time. The sunglasses popularity continued throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s but then slumped until the late 2000s when artists like Katy Perry and Bruno Mars wore them in their music videos.
Round and Oversized

Often known today simply as Jackie O’s, these sunglasses were popularized by former First Lady and fashion icon Jackie Kennedy during the years that her husband was president. They are instantly recognizable by their large round shape and still serve to make quite a fashion statement when worn today. It’s hard to wear these sunglasses and not channel some of the grace, style, and elegance that Jackie was so famous for.
Gold-rimmed Aviator
National Sunglasses Day June 27

The history of the archetypal Ray-Ban Aviators begins in the 1930s when US Army pilots were reporting that the glare from the sun was giving them headaches and altitude sickness. American company Bausch & Lomb created what was originally known as “Anti-Glare,” sunglasses with plastic frames and green lenses. Just a year later they were remodeled with metal frames and rebranded as “Aviators,” as we know them today.
The Clubmaster
National Sunglasses Day June 27
Clubmasters are a type of browline sunglasses, which gets its name from the fact that the bold upper part of the frames frame the lenses like the eyebrow frames the eyes. Ray-Ban introduced the Clubmaster in the 1980s when Bruce Willis wore a pair of browline Shuron Ronsirs on the series Moonlighting. The Clubmasters gained popularity and quickly became the third best-selling sunglasses of the 1980s, after Ray-Ban’s Wayfarer and Aviator styles.
Oliver Peoples Gregory Peck
Not only did Gregory Peck win an Oscar for his role as Atticus Finch in the 1962 film To Kill A Mockingbird, but he also won a fair amount of acclaim for the glasses frames he wore in the film. These frames are once again popular today, thanks partly to their reintroduction in 2011 when Oliver Peoples released a new model to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the novel that inspired the film. Don these on National Sunglasses Day and channel your inner Atticus Finch.
Oliver Goldsmith Manhattan
National Sunglasses Day
Audrey Hepburn is one of film’s most well-known faces, and it was usually with a pair of Oliver Goldsmith Manhattans framing her eyes. These large, rounded-square sunglasses were first made famous when Hepburn wore them in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a role that was originally supposed to be played by Marilyn Monroe. The glasses, instantly recognizable today, are still popular.
Rose-colored Glasses
Photo: Allyn Scura
“To see the world through rose-colored glasses” is a phrase that means to view the world in a perpetually optimistic, perhaps naive, and unrealistic way. It remains in question what the origin of the phrase is, though there are some interesting and possible theories. One theory suggests that early mapmakers used rose petals to clean the lenses of the glasses. Not only would the natural oils protect the glass, but they would also leave a rose-colored stain.

Interesting about cameras

A camera is an optical instrument that captures a visual image. At a basic level, cameras consist of sealed boxes (the camera body), with a small hole (the aperture) that allows light through to capture an image on a light-sensitive surface (usually a digital sensor or photographic film). Cameras have various mechanisms to control how the light falls onto the light-sensitive surface. Lenses focus the light entering the camera. The aperture can be narrowed or widened. A shutter mechanism determines the amount of time the photosensitive surface is exposed to light.

The still image camera is the main instrument in the art of photography. Captured images may be reproduced later as part of the process of photographydigital imaging, or photographic printing. Similar artistic fields in the moving-image camera domain are film, videography, and cinematography.

The word camera comes from camera obscura, the Latin name of the original device for projecting an image onto a flat surface (literally translated to "dark chamber"). The modern photographic camera evolved from the camera obscura. The first permanent photograph was made in 1825 by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce.

Most cameras capture light from the visible spectrum, while specialized cameras capture other portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as infrared.

All cameras use the same basic design: light enters an enclosed box through a converging or convex lens and an image is recorded on a light-sensitive medium. A shutter mechanism controls the length of time that light enters the camera.

Most cameras also have a viewfinder, which shows the scene to be recorded, along with means to adjust various combinations of focus, aperture and shutter speed.

Easy Italian recipes are sometimes hard to come by. Well, a quick stop at the dairy aisle was all it took to inspire us to whip up this easy, cheesy casserole. Plus, with June being National Dairy Food Month, we couldn't think of a better time to take advantage of all the sales that can be found in our supermarket's dairy case. So grab a spoon and dig into our All-In-One Italian Bake! It's always a praise-worthy recipe.

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 (24-ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (8-ounce) container mascarpone cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 (11-ounce) package refrigerated French bread loaf
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Fresh chopped parsley (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

  1. Preheat oven to 350º. Spray a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.  In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sauté ground beef 5 to 7 minutes or until browned; drain. Stir in spaghetti sauce.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix cream cheese, mascarpone cheese, Parmesan cheese, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, and the Italian seasoning until well combined. Spoon half the meat mixture into baking dish. Dollop with cheese mixture. (The best way to dollop is to use 2 soup spoons.) Top cheese mixture with remaining meat mixture.
  3. Remove bread loaf from packaging and place on a cutting board. Cut into 18 slices, each about 1/2-inch thick. Place bread rounds evenly over meat mixture.
  4. In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine butter and remaining 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder; microwave 15 seconds or until butter is melted.  Brush dough with garlic butter mixture.
  5. Bake uncovered 30 minutes. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the top and bake an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.

For the sheer love of all things hair, style and wisdom, June 26th is National Beautician’s Day.  Also known as stylists and cosmetologists, these men and women make us look our best every day.

Cosmetology is the study and application of a beauty treatment. The branches of cosmetology include hair styling, skin care, cosmetics, manicures, pedicures, and electrology. This means they buff, polish, trim, pluck, perk, brighten, lighten, plump, and mostly make our finest features shine. They continually train in all the ways to keep us looking our best while keeping up with the latest styles, the most reliable products, treatments, and techniques.

Many also become close confidants. Over many years of caring for our hair and skin, they come to know our families and watch them grow, experiencing our ups and downs with us. As a result, we tend to develop a strong bond with our beautician. For all these reasons, they deserve to be appreciated on National Beautician’s Day.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Whether your beautician is new or the relationship has grown over the years, be sure to share your appreciation with a token of gratitude. Consider giving your beautician flowers, a card, or a cup of coffee. One of the best ways to show your appreciation is by giving them your recommendation on their social media channels. Glowing praise goes a long way toward building their clientele.
