Smoke & Heat ~ Churchill's Breakfast ~ Brenda Flores ~ Chocolate Cheesecake Hazelnut Spread ~ Dog In Car ~ SOS Sorrento Lemon ~ Mustard Day

Good 67º smokey morning. The full moon was not available to see with all the smoke we have covering us all. Two big fires in Shasta and a couple just north of us here in Oregon. Nothing has improved since yesterday. God Bless our firefighters and National Guard who are working so hard on these fires!

We did hit 107º hear again, Medford broke their record hitting 109º. My UPS guy, Dave (Dude's dad) came by yesterday and said he thought about moving to Arizona, where it's cooler!! LOL

Boy howdy did the smoke from the Shasta fires come roaring up here. I had the windows open for a while, since it was still cool, but the smell was horrible, so closed everything up.

Breakfast yesterday was cottage cheese, leftover veggies, and a few drops of dressing. OMGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

Now speaking of breakfast... a healthy one is the best, obviously, but some people, like Winston Churchill had a different idea:

Bucking the modern trend of eating light, Britain's beloved prime minister always ate a big breakfast, which included a poached egg, toast, jam, cold meats, grapefruit — and whiskey soda.
He preferred his meal to be brought on two trays, The Telegraph reported. On the first tray, Churchill wanted the poached egg, toast, jam, butter, coffee, milk, and cold chicken or other meats. On the second tray, he liked his grapefruit, sugar bowl, glass of orange squash, and a whisky soda.
After eating, he would wash his hands and smoke a morning cigar.
Whiskey soda? OMG!!

Today is a special birthday. My pal Brenda Flores. We worked together at CF Braun in Alhambra. Here she is with her Robert. And talk about a good cook... OMG, Bren makes the BEST Mexican food in the world!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRENDA!!!  ♥

A lunch snack... cottage cheese, banana, and a rice cake smothered with Jif Chocolate Cheesecake Hazlenut spread! OMGOOOOOOOD!

Yesterday was hair-cut day and Safeway shopping. Leah and I had a gab-fest while she did my hair. Then off to do shopping for fresh vegetables, fruit, cat/dog food, wine, and items for a casserole tonight ... my infamous Bavarian Dinner. Recipe tomorrow.  While I was putting groceries into my car I saw a black Ford Focus with a dog inside. I was FURIOUS! A beautiful Golden Retriever melting in that car in the heat! I beat feet back to the store and told customer service, loudly, that a dog was in that car. They announced over the loudspeaker "Would the person who owns a black Ford Focus come rescue your dog!" Boy I was angry. Walking back to my car behind me comes this man carrying a small child, about 18 months old, and he goes to the car, puts her in, and starts it up. I stood there giving him dirty looks! He had been standing at the customer service counter when I told the store employees about the dog and how he needs to be ARRESTED! Guess that is why he never made eye contact with me!

After coming home, carrying groceries from the car in the heat and smoke, and putting most away I crashed in my chair. I sipped on some cool 360 Sorrento Lemon Vodka. Oh so lemony and oh SO good and refreshing!!!

I had received a note from Dave Clark (LASD ret) who told me about a dressing he made. His wife Pam had made some cucumber soup (I begged for the recipe) and later he was going to make a ranch dressing. But instead of using buttermilk he used some of the cucumber soup. He said it was awesome. Sounds good to me. I have the recipe for both and will make them in the next day or two. Will share...

Stayin' inside today. Breathing that smoke can't be good for you. Should hit the triple digits again, but cooler (ha) only 103º!

National Mustard Day

"Roquefort Mustard"! I want to find some of that!!!! Sadly it's not at Amazon!

Here is some really interesting reading on the history of mustard:
http://www.thenibble.com/REVIEWS/main/condiments/mustard/mustard-glossary.asp

When I was young and had a chest cold, my Mother would make a 'mustard plaster' and put it on my chest ... dry mustard, flour, and water to make a paste... wrapped in a soft thin cloth and after rubbing Vasaline on my chest she would lay it on top until my chest turned red.
