Good 36º damp out there Kiss me I'm Irish morning! Rained last
night after a VERY windy late afternoon. Rain started about midnight. It appears
we got about 1/4".
Here is my wallpaper on my computer... an Irish pub in
Dublin... How fun it would be to celebrate there!
Origin of the name Limerick
The origin of the name limerick for this type of poem is debated. As of
several years ago, its usage was first documented in England in 1898 (New English Dictionary) and in
the United States in 1902, but in recent years several earlier uses have been
documented. The name is generally taken to be a reference to the City or County of Limerick in Ireland sometimes particularly to the Maigue Poets, and may derive
from an earlier form of nonsense verse parlour game that traditionally included a
refrain that included "Will [or won't] you come (up) to
Limerick?"
The earliest known use of the term limerick for this type of poem is an 1880 reference,
in a Saint John, New Brunswick newspaper, to an apparently
well-known tune,[10]
- There was a young rustic named Mallory,
- who drew but a very small salary.
- When he went to the show,
- his purse made him go
- to a seat in the uppermost gallery.
I went to the pub for a drink
A man said, "It's Patty's day, I think"
SO I pinched his arm
I really meant no harm
But now I'm sitting in the clink
There was a gal named Sue
Cooking was her favorite thing to do
She did love to dine
And drink some fine wine
What she misses most is her 'Dew'

And Englishman, Scotsman, Welshman, and yer man Paddy Irishman were
captures while fighting in a far-off foreign land. One of the captors said,
"We're going to line you up in front of a firing squad and shoot you all in
turn. But first you can each make a final request." The Englishman responds,
"I'd like to hear 'God Save The Queen' just one more time to remind me of the
auld country, played by the London All Boys Choir with Morris Dancers dancing to
the tune." The Scotsman replies, "I'd like to hear 'Auld Lang Syne' just one
more time to remind me of the auld country, with Higland dancers skipping gaily
to the tune." The Welshman answers, "I'd like to hear 'Men of Harlech' just one
more time to remind me of lovely Wales, sung by the Treorchy Male Voice Choir."
Paddy said quickly, "I'd like to be shot
first."

"May the road rise to meet you,May
the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you
In the palm of his hand."

Being half Irish.... and half Scottish.... I love celebrating St. Patrick's
Day, even though I am of Protestant Irish heritage and St. Pat is the Catholic
holiday.... still, corned beef and all things Irish are GREAT! Here is the Laney
family Irish coat of arms... As you can see it's not green... Green is Catholic
Irish...
Someday in person I want
to see this St. Patrick's Day in Chicago and that green
