Throw Back Thursday ~ Weather ~ Picture of the Day ~ Hummingbirds ~ Tuna Twist ~ Bill Postmus ~ National Talk Like A Pirate Day

Good 52º dark foggy morning.

Happy Throw Back Thursday ... my sister Marion and I 60 years ago... 1949. I was 4 and she was 15.

Yesterday the rain came and went and we topped at 63º.
It stayed like this all day....

For all of this month prior, we were in the high 70ºs, 80ºs, and 90ºs. This cooler weather started Monday. I even turned on the heater Tuesday and Wednesday! Summer over????? I guess so, the first day of Fall is Monday.

Picture of the Day....

Interesting about hummingbirds...

Hummingbirds are birds native to the Americas and constitute the biological family Trochilidae. They are among the smallest of birds, most species measuring 3–5 inches in length. The smallest extant bird species is a hummingbird, the 2.0 inches bee hummingbird weighing less than 0.07 oz.
They are known as hummingbirds because of the humming sound created by their beating wings which flap at high frequencies audible to humans. They hover in mid-air at rapid wing-flapping rates, which vary from around 12 beats per second in the largest species, to in excess of 80 in some of the smallest. Of those species that have been measured in wind tunnels, their top speed exceeds 34 mph and some species can dive at speeds in excess of 49 mph.

Hummingbirds have the greatest mass-specific metabolic rate of any homeothermic animal. To conserve energy when food is scarce, and nightly when not foraging, they can go into torpor, a state similar to hibernation, slowing metabolic rate to 1/15th of its normal rate.

From Mr. Food... Tuna Twist

We teamed a pasta salad with a tuna salad to come up with this dish that's summertime-perfect and very budget-friendly. Our Tuna Twist is a new take on an old recipe that's great for a light summer dinner. Or you can take this tuna pasta salad to a picnic or potluck (where it'll be the first thing to disappear!).
  • 1/2 pound twist pasta
  • 2 cups mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (12-ounce) can tuna, drained and flaked
  • 1 (10-ounce) package frozen peas, thawed
  • 2 celery stalks, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill

  1. Cook pasta according to package directions; drain, rinse, and drain again.

  2. In a large bowl, combine mayonnaise, vinegar, and pepper; mix well. Add pasta and remaining ingredients. Toss until well combined; cover, and chill at least 2 hours before serving.

Special birthday today... Bill Postmus (LASD ret) is celebrating. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILL!

Talk Like a Pirate Day sails away annually on September 19th.
All you bilge rats, Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrgh! As you are out and about on September 19th, don’t be surprised if people are saying, “Ahoy Matie,” “Avast,” “Aye, Aye Capt’n,” “Land ho!” “Hornpipe,” and many other pirate-like phrases, because it’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
While ordering your coffee in the drive-thru, ask if they have change for gold bullion. Try testing your pirate language out at the library when asking for the location of Moby Dick. The pirate language always fairs well in rough seas. Settle a debate with “I’m right or I’ll walk the plank!”
When the boss gives you a new project, “Aye, aye, Capt’n,” is the correct response. However, beware calling the boss any frothy names. The goal of the day is not to lose your job.
To polish your persona, practice a swagger, limp or squint. Long days at sea give pirates unique qualities.
Educators, visit the National Day Calendar Classroom for projects all year long – including talking like a pirate!

TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY HISTORY
