Weather ~ Power Outage ~ Picture of the Day ~ Owls ~ Chinese Spring Rolls ~ Mayflower Day

Good 49º morning.

Yesterday I heard an explosion and my power went off at 7:45 in the morning. I called Pacific Power to report it. Then I got frustrated sitting alone in the dark so I got in my car and took a drive. Down at the high school there was a Pacific Power truck so I stopped and talked to the driver. I told him what happened. He wrote my address and gate code. Said he'd go take a look. I took a drive. On my way home there were two Pacific Power trucks going up my driveway. They said the power should be back on. There was a power box on my property that had exploded. They fixed it. Yippeeeeee..... Back to normal now.

We topped at 106º!

Picture of the Day.... crazy tree!😁

Interesting about owls...........

The design of owls' wings allows them to fly in almost absolute silence. Different parts of their wings and the characteristics of their feathers contribute to their silent flight. Owls have broad wings with large surface areas that help them to float through the air without flapping too much. Less flapping makes less noise.
The main reason owls can fly silently is the uniquely designed leading edges of their primary feathers. When most birds fly, turbulence – created when air gushes over the surface of their wings – causes noise. Owls' wings, however, are unique because they reduce noise caused by turbulence.

An owl's primary feathers are serrated like a comb. This design breaks down turbulence into smaller currents called micro-turbulences. Then the edge of the feather muffles the sound of air flowing over the wing and shifts the angle at which air flows. These soft feathers allow air to pass through which eliminates sound. Some people suspect that, as the owls flies, these feathers may also shift sound energy created by the owl's wing to a higher frequency that prey can't hear.

If you love ordering spring rolls from Chinese takeout restaurants, then this is the recipe for you! Our spring rolls are easy to make and taste amazing. They're filled with a flavorful veggie mixture and fried until golden and crispy. They make a great appetizer or can be served right alongside some fried rice and your favorite takeout main dish!

  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 6 cups shredded Chinese cabbage
  • 2 cups fresh bean sprouts
  • 1 large carrot, shredded
  • 3 scallions (green onions), chopped
  • 12 spring roll or egg roll wrappers
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • Oil for frying

  1. In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger, and garlic powder; mix well.

  2. In a large bowl, combine cabbage, bean sprouts, carrot, and scallions; mix well. Pour soy sauce mixture over cabbage mixture; toss to coat well and let stand 10 minutes. Place cabbage mixture in a colander and squeeze to drain well.

  3. Spoon about 1/4 cup cabbage mixture evenly onto center of each egg roll wrapper. Lightly brush edges of egg roll wrapper with beaten egg. Fold one corner of each egg roll wrapper up over cabbage mixture then fold both sides over, envelope fashion; roll up tightly.

  4. Heat about 1-1/2 inches oil in a deep medium saucepan over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking. Add spring rolls in batches and fry 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until golden. Drain on a paper towel-lined platter. Serve immediately, but be sure to use caution -- the filling will be hot.

****To serve these like they do in Chinese restaurants, don't forget the dipping sauce! A couple of our favorite dipping sauces are duck sauce and spicy mustard.

Mayflower Day commemorates the day the ship set sail from Plymouth, England in 1620.

On September 16 of 1620, the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England with 102 souls on board. These colonists- men, women, children, some seeking fortune, some seeking religious freedom – were later known as pilgrims.

The colonists’ intended to land at Virginia. However, after 66 days at sea, storms and winds blew them off course. After spotting modern-day Cape Cod, the members of the Mayflower intended on exploring the mouth of the Hudson River. However, rough seas continued to plague the ship. They turned back and stayed at Cape Cod.

For the next few weeks, the Pilgrims explored Cape Cod and eventually settled on Plymouth for their plantation.

MAYFLOWER DAY HISTORY

This day commemorates the day the Mayflower set sail for the New World. At the time, William Bradford, the separatist leader whose journal historians often reference for Mayflower history, recorded dates according to the Julian calendar.  At that point in history, both the Julian and the Gregorian (the calendar most often used today) were both in use. There is a 10-day difference between the two calendars, accounting for the different dates across historical accountings of the Mayflower’s departure from Plymouth, England.
