Interesting about Babe Ruth.....
 
George Herman " Babe " Ruth Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948) was an American professional baseball player whose career in Major League Baseball (MLB) spanned 22 seasons, from 1914 through 1935. Nicknamed " The Bambino " and " The Sultan of Swat ", he began his MLB career as a stellar left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox , but achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees .
 
Babe Ruth takes top spot, with the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold. The record was set when the item was sold at auction in 2012, eclipsing the fee paid for Naismith’s rule book which had been set two years earlier. The item, described as ‘the most desirable baseball artifact’ in history, had previously been kept at the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
 
The incredible price is said to be because the jersey is the oldest known New York Yankees jersey worn by Ruth. Its significance in the power-shift of baseball, as well as its cultural impact on New York outside the world of sport, is massive. The jersey which was first worn in 1920, sold for $4,415,658, and far exceeds even the second most expensive item of Babe Ruth memorabilia.

Meat loaf, potatoes, and veggies all wrapped up in one dynamite dinner...Now that's smart cooking! You won't need any side dishes with this easy beef dinner because it's all cooked up into one tasty meal. All you'll need is a plate, a fork... and your appetite!

 

  • 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 (10.5-ounce) can condensed vegetarian vegetable soup
  • 1 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 lightly beaten eggs, used separately
  • 2 cups instant mashed potatoes, prepared according to package directions reducing water to 3/4 cup

 

 

  1. Preheat oven to 350º.
     
  2. In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients except potatoes and 1 egg.
     
  3. On a rimmed cookie sheet or in a 9" x 13" glass baking dish that has been coated with nonstick vegetable spray, form the mixture into an oval-shaped loaf and bake for 1 hour.
     
  4. While whipping the instant mashed potatoes with a fork, add the remaining beaten egg and whip until well blended.
     
  5. When meat loaf has cooked for 1 hour, remove from oven and drain off grease in the pan. Completely "frost" meat loaf with the potatoes and return to the oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until potatoes are slightly crusted and heated through.

July 21st dedicates a giant menu of items to National Junk Food Day. Each year, the day permits us to chow down on the foods we usually don’t include in our daily diet. Junk foods, by definition, typically contain high fats, sugars, salt, and calories and very little nutritional value.
With the advent of packaged foods during the late 1800s, junk food made its way into American life. Still, home-cooked meals remained the standard for several more decades. Eventually, after World War II, the artery-clogging industry took off. Since the population ate out more, traveled more, the industry was primed to produce products at an increased rate.
From the frozen food aisle to fast food chains, a myriad of choices for consumers flooded the market. Potato chips, baked goods and so much more filled supermarket shelves, prepackaged and ready to go.
By the 1970s, junk foods earned a name and a bad one, too. Michael Jacobson, a microbiologist, is credited with coining the phrase. He also set out to curb our appetite for the high sugar, high salt, high preservative foods Americans consumed at an alarming rate.
While deep-fried, fat-laced foods increase our waistlines, cholesterol, and blood sugar numbers, an occasional indulgence shouldn’t impact a healthy, diverse diet and lifestyle. Also, producers make healthy versions of our favorite junk foods to entice us to enjoy a little.

HOW TO OBSERVE 

Snack a little. Chow down on your favorite chip, dip or treat. In fact, treat the family or workplace to a beverage or take out.
