Snow ~ Sunshine! ~ Clouds ~ Sami ~ Crock Pot Cabbage ~ White Wedding Dress Tradition ~ Banana Cream Pie Day

Good  27º it snowed morning. Only got about 1/2-1".

Trouble with AOL, won't load email so I can't send any either. I cleaned off the satellite dish, but still not working. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.......

Yesterday the sun came out for a bit. Ahhhhhhhh..... so nice! Sadly 30 minutes later we were covered with clouds!

Today is a very special day.. it's granddaughter Sami's birthday. Into the double digits. HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY SAMI!

This recipe from Chris of Recipes That Crock!

Crock Pot Cabbage Recipe: This super easy recipe tastes just like grandma used to make! Tender cabbage with the savory flavor of bacon and onions makes the perfect side dish for any family dinner.

  • 1 small head of cabbage- cored and chopped
  • ⅔ cup real bacon crumbles ( or 8 slices cooked crisp and chopped)
  • 15 oz jar pearl onion, drained
  • 8 cups chicken broth
  • ¼ cup butter- sliced
  • salt and pepper

  1. Place your cabbage in your crock pot
  2. Top with remaining ingredients
  3. Cover and cook on high for 4 -6 hours or until cabbage is tender.

  • I used one of my favorite 6 qt slow cookers to whip this up. You are going to want a large slow cooker because it will be quite full until the cabbage cooks down.
  • We like our cabbage VERY tender, so we tend to cook it longer. If you like your cabbage a little firmer, just reduce your cooking time.
  • We LOVE using real bacon crumbles to skip the step of frying bacon. If you would prefer to cook your own bacon, go for it.
  • Similarly, we LOVE the flavor those little baby pearl onions in the jar bring to the table. You can usually find them in vegetable aisle or the same aisle with the pickles. However, if you want to use regular onions instead, I would just chop one up and cook them a little in your bacon grease before adding to the cabbage
This is interesting about white wedding dresses....

The tradition of a white wedding dress is commonly credited to Queen Victoria's choice to wear a white court dress at her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840. She selected a white dress, which was considered an unusual choice at a time when colors were more usual, made from heavy silk satin. The young queen decreed that no one else should wear white at her wedding—trend-setting, again—and had the pattern for her dress destroyed so that no one could copy it afterwards. Wearing white was quickly adopted by wealthy, fashionable brides.

National Banana Cream Pie Day is recognized annually on March 2nd. Celebrated throughout the United States, pie lovers enjoy this day as they get to indulge in one of America’s most popular cream pies.
Remember, bananas are loaded with potassium!
The process from the traditional custard pie was modified into a recipe for the appetizing and flavorful banana cream pie.  Now there are many variations in thousands of recipes for this yummy pie and recipes for banana cream pie can be found in recipe books dating back to the 19th century.
The banana cream pie was ranked the number one favorite dessert among the soldiers of the United States Armed Services in the 1950s.

A banana cream pie can be made as simple as:
1 box instant banana pudding  –  1 pkg cream cheese (softened)  –  2 large bananas – 1 container whipped topping – graham cracker crust
Mix pudding with 1 1/2 cups milk, cool in fridge until thickened. With mixer, combine pudding and cream cheese until blended.  Slice bananas into graham cracker crust.  Spoon pudding mixture over bananas and top with whipped topping.  Chill for at least 2 hours. Enjoy!!
