Interesting about billionaires

It’s been a terrible year for many, but the good times keep on rolling for America’s richest. According to Forbes, there are 2,755 billionaires worldwide. The United States has the most billionaires, with 724, followed by China (including Hong Kong and Macau) with 698. These two countries account for more than 50% of the world’s billionaires. The top billionaire and world’s richest individual is Tesla's CEO (Electric Cars) Elon Musk, worth $220 billion.

Close behind at number two is Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, worth $177 billion.

How much is a billion? It might depend on whom you ask. Billion was borrowed from French in the late 1600s to indicate the number one million raised to the power of two, or a million million—a number represented by a 1 followed by 12 zeros. However, the French later changed their naming conventions so that a billion became a thousand million (a 1 followed by 9 zeros) and a trillion became a thousand thousand million (or a million million, the old billion). The French have since returned to the older system, but it was this new system that was adopted by American English speakers in the 1800s. In Britain, the newer system has seen increasing use since the 1950s, but the older sense is still sometimes used there as well.

We know! We know! Apple Lasagna sounds strange, doesn't it? Well, we sure will be surprised if this great lasagna recipe doesn't become a favorite snack or dessert with your family.

  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 2 (21-ounce) cans apple pie filling
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 6 tablespoons light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup quick oats
  • Dash of ground nutmeg

  1. Preheat oven to 350º. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook noodles to desired doneness; drain and set aside.

  2. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Layer 4 noodles on bottom of prepared dish. Spread 1 can of apple pie filling on top, slicing any extra-thick apples. Layer 4 noodles over the apples.

  3. In a large bowl, mix together the Cheddar cheese, ricotta cheese, egg and granulated sugar; spread them evenly over the noodles and top with the remaining 4 noodles. Spoon remaining can of apple pie filling over noodles.

  4. In a small bowl, crumble together the flour, cinnamon, margarine, brown sugar and quick oats. Sprinkle over the apple filling.

  5. Bake 45 minutes. Let stand 15 minutes then slice into serving-sized pieces and serve warm or cold.

***If desired, you can mix together 1 cup (1/2 pint) sour cream and 1/3 cup light or dark brown sugar and serve the lasagna with dollops of this topping for garnish.

On April 4th each year, National School Librarian Day recognizes the professionals who keep the school library in working order. School librarians spend long hours keeping the library organized. They are also dedicated to helping our children find the resources they need to keep learning. School librarians are the people who create an environment where students can learn every day of the year. Their work is an impressive accomplishment.

The school librarians provide guidance and expose our youth not only to texts, print media, and literature but to digital resources and technology, too. These resources also connect them to libraries around the world. A school librarian’s ability to manage scores of media and a school full of students with numerous projects and schedules astounds us.
