Good 34ยบ dark and gloomy morning. Got somewhere near 1/4" rain yesterday.
The unspeakable crime at that school in Connecticut is beyond words. It has
hit me, as it has so many of you, like a ton of bricks. The tears for those poor
children and the families just keep coming. My heart breaks for those parents
who have to go to the morgue to identify their babies! Rest in Peace. God loves
you all. I pray for healing for those who lost their babies, their
grandchildren, their siblings, their nieces and nephews. God Bless them all.
AND the gun control freaks need to STAND DOWN while this plays out and
stay out of the limelight! Damn.
We have to keep moving forward and be thankful for all we have.
This came from Ed Chenal. Amazing and cute! He's only 4 years old!!
And then from Joe Kirk (ret LASD) .... LOL
Good one Joe!!!
Yesterday I made Erika's Blautkraut. It comes from her mother's cookbook
"Meine Rezepte". I, of course, changed some of the recipe... cooked it in my
crockpot for 3 hours, used powdered cloves and as a substitute for bay leaves I
used crushed thyme leaves. Here is the original recipe...
3 T. lard ( Erika said to use butter)
2# shredded red cabbage (E uses a 3-4# head, I did too and shredded 3/4 of
it)
2 onions chopped (I used 1)
2 bay leaves
2 cloves
salt and pepper to taste
2 Granny Smith apples, chopped
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. white vinegar
Melt butter in the pot and alternatively add the cabbage, apples, &
onions in several layers. (I did two layers in the crockpot with the butter
melted in the bottom.
Sprinkle sugar on top and wash over it with the vinegar. (I also added 3
more pats of butter on top) Simmer on low, covered, for about 2 hours (or
longer). Stir now and then. I put it on high for 3 hours, stirring every hour.
Erika likes hers best reheated. It can be made ahead and freezes well. A very
tasty side to any meal, turkey... pork...chicken... or ham. And I liked it hot
or cold.
