Good almost afternoon.... 61ยบ cloudy day. I worked on the
Smilebox for the blog most of the morning. Finally up and ready to go.
As for the Boatnik yesterday, everyone deserted me.... my
friends and family didn't want to go because it was "raining". HELLO. This is
Oregon. Ok, fine, so Bill and Jeannie dropped off their VIP car pass and
beer/wine tickets, Brian gave me his lunch tickets and his beer/wine tickets.
Off I went with more tickets than I could possible use. Got there and a
pleasant discovery was that the VIP area and tables had all been covered with
popup tents to keep everyone dry. I started talking to Karen Baertschiger,
whose son is a Oregon state senator from Grants Pass/Rogue River district.
She and her friend offered to let me sit at their table. Nice
ladies. The Memorial Day celebration and ceremonies were at the river....
patriotic songs, flag ceremony, flag salute, prayer, and a wreath lowered into
the Rogue River by veterans..... 21 gun salute.
Wine provided by Bridgeview, beer was Budweiser. Tim from
Bridgeview was so nice and provided info on his wine, one of my most favorites!
Lunch was barbecued by Cartwrights, meat/fish market.
Brian and Jen's friends Jessica and Dan and their Dana and Troy showed up,
so I gave them 4 lunch tickets.
I was heading to get some wine and encountered an OLD veteran (hat said
so!) I held out my hand than thanked him. I had on my USMC black
sweatshirt
He told me he was a Marine. I congratulated him, Semper Fi'd
, and told him my husband and son and Italian son were all Marines, stationed at
Camp Pendleton (son Brian Pendleton!) and he said he was stationed there too. I
asked him if he had a lunch ticket, "no", so I gave him one. Also asked if he
had beer tickets, "one", so gave him two more. He was VERY happy. Then I ran
into a uniformed Or. Air National Guard Sgt. Asked him if his men could drink in
uniform. Only if they did it in the VIP tent. Gave him the rest of the beer/wine
tickets (12 or 15). He was very happy.
I didn't stay for the end of the race... dogs in the house so had to get
home...
Results for the Whitewater Hydroplane boat race: Tyler
McGinnis, boat #9, of Gold Beach won the race. Jeb Curtis also from Gold
Beach in boat #8 hit a rock and "flat spun" his boat into the bank and suffered
non-life threatening injuries. Transported to Three Rivers Hospital and his
family says he's doing fine. Jeff Larid of Gold Hill came in second and Jeff
Lewis (44 years of racing experience and the all time leading winner of this
race) came in third.
