Fires ~ Temperatures ~ Air Quality ~ Throw Back Thursday ~  Picture of the Day ~ Back In The Day Pagers ~ Hot Cheesy Corn Dip ~ Pour Authority w/ Jeannie and Dee ~ National Daiquiri Day

Good 53º very smokey morning.

With all the fires up here we have gotten severe air quality warnings. Here is my mountain in smoke yesterday at 5:30pm.....

And this morning at 6:30am......

Our temperatures yesterday were cooler.  We topped at 99º. Ahhhhhh..... it wasn't too bad. It's just that there is smoke all over the valleys. Air quality health alerts have been issued.

There was a big fire next door to Costco in Central Point on Tuesday.... Here's the parking lot....
This fire area came right up to the back door of the Emergency Animal Hospital where Dude had his leg surgery. They evacuated all the animals.

Good Throw Back Thursday....
Me in 1979 after receiving my diploma from the LA Co Sheriff 's Reserve Academy ....

A friend of mine, Arlon Webb (Wilsonite) saw on FB a post that asked if you could say a word or a sentence that would not have made a lick of sense 50 years ago. One answer was "Internet" and another was "I'm ubering to the party." Mine would be "i phone".
Remember when pagers were popular? Here is a bit of history on pagers.... https://www.thoughtco.com/history-of-pagers-and-beepers-1992315

Pagers were developed in the 1950s and 1960s, and became widely used by the 1980s. In the 2000s, the widespread availability of cellphones and smartphones has greatly diminished the pager industry.

Now this is good, but I don't think it's a recipe for this time of year, unless you use a crock pot (directions at the end). This would be good for a Thanksgiving party, a Halloween party, or for a Super Bowl party..... from Kevin the Closet Cook (small kitchen!!)
Hot Cheesy Corn Dip....

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cups corn (fresh, thawed frozen or drained canned)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1/4 cup red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 jalapeno, finely diced
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup monterey jack cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • salt, pepper and cayenne to taste
  1. Melt the butter in a pan over medium-high heat, add the corn, saute until the corn starts to turn golden brown, about 5 minutes, and set aside.
  2. Melt the butter in the pan over medium-high heat add the onion, and pepper and saute until the onions are soft, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Add the green onion, jalapeno and garlic and saute until fragrant, about a minute.
  4. Mix the corn, onions, peppers, mayonnaise, cheeses and cayenne in a bowl, reserving some of the cheese.
  5. Pour the mixture into a baking pan and top with the reserved cheese.
  6. Bake in a preheated 350º oven until bubbling on the sides and golden brown on top, about 10-20 minutes.
Slow Cooker: Optionally implement steps 1-3, mix everything, place it in the slow cooker and cook until the cheese is nice and melted about 1-2 hours on high or 2-4 hours on low.
Tip: Assemble the dip the day before and bake it on the day that you serve it to save some time. The bake time will be 10-15 minutes longer when baking right out of the fridge.

Yesterday I took my SUV in for it's servicing. Jeannie Patterson (wife of the infamous LASD Homocide Bill) met me at the dealership and we went to The Pour Authority for lunch. Dee Yellin (wife of the infamous LASD SEB Motors Dale) met us there. We had wine and pizza and talked and talked for a couple hours!! Good to be with old friends again!

All I know. Nuff said. Happy TBT. Ciao.

Each year on July 19, people across the United States fill their glasses with a rum-based cocktail and toast to National Daiquiri Day. So, raise your glass and join all of the others in this celebration!
Daiquiri is a family of cocktails whose main ingredients are rum, citrus juice (typically lime) and sugar.
Tasting of sunshine and beaches, it might be hard to believe the daiquiri was likely invented by men blasting away in the mines of a small community off the coast of Cuba.  Jennings Cox, an American engineer, supervised a mining operation located in a village named Daiquiri in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.  Every day after work Cox and his employees would gather at the Venus bar. Then one day Cox mixed up Bacardi, lime, sugar in a tall glass of ice. Naming the new beverage after the Daiquiri mines, the drink soon became a staple in Havana.  Eventually, shaved ice was used and sometimes lemons or both lemons and limes.
In 1909, Admiral Lucius W. Johnson, a U.S. Navy medical officer, tried Cox’s drink and subsequently introduced it to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C.  The popularity of the Daiquiri then increased over the next few decades.
The Daiquiri was one of the favorite drinks of writer Ernest Hemingway and President John F. Kennedy.
This drink is sometimes served frozen, combined and poured from a blender eliminating the need for manual pulverization.  Drinks such as the frozen Daiquiri are often commercially made in machines which produce a texture similar to a smoothie and come in a wide variety of flavors.  Another way to create a frozen Daiquiri is by using frozen limeade, which provides the required texture, sweetness and sourness all at one time.

Oh my how adorable you were when you graduated as a Reserve! So young and oh so cute!

I remember when we got pagers for our boys. They hated it because they said it was like a leach. lol We told them if we paged you and you were driving and almost home DO NOT stop. If they were just out and about they had to find a pay phone and call us. :)

How horrid about those fires. I just hate fires and earthquakes! :
