Picture of the Day ~ Wild Turkeys ~ Tomato Pie ~ Dave Smail ~ Thrift Store ~ Rogue River Rooster Crow ~ National Camera Day

Good 46º clear sunny morning.

Friday already and only 2 days left of June!

Yesterday was really beautiful and the temps stayed in the 70ºs! By 3pm we were only at 78º.

Picture of the Day

Interesting about wild turkeys.

There are three types.....hens and chicks, Toms, and Jakes. A full grown Tom has a "beard" about 9". That is the hair that sticks out on their chest.

A Jake has a beard about 3-4".

The wild turkey population in Oregon depleted back in the early 1970's, so Rio Grand Turkeys (or as we call them Texas Wild Turkeys) were imported in 1975 and have thrived ever since.

Tomato Pie from Mr. Food
This summer, how about using those ruby red tomatoes to bake up something a little unusual but a whole lot tasty? We call it Summer's Best Tomato Pie and it's so fresh and creamy, you're gonna have a hard time stopping at one slice. With tomatoes being such a great summer food buy, you may want to bake one for a friend, too!

  • 1/2 (15-ounce) package refrigerated pie crusts
  • 2 large tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Parmesan cheese for sprinkling
Preheat oven to 450º. Unroll pie crust and place in a 9-inch pie plate; fold edges under and crimp. Prick bottom and sides of crust with a fork. Bake 8 minutes, remove from oven, and reduce oven to 350º.

Arrange tomato slices in crust. In a medium bowl, combine egg, heavy cream, mayonnaise, mozzarella cheese, garlic powder, salt and pepper; mix well and pour over tomatoes. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Bake 35 to 40 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let sit 5 minutes, then cut into wedges and serve.

I also dropped off two bags of clothes. Ahhhhh............    Now back to cleaning out more stuff and clothes!!!  They were happy with what I took down there as this weekend is Rooster Crow and they are going to have a big outdoor sale. Good timing! http://www.rogueriverchamber.com/rooster_crow.php

National Camera Day is observed each year on June 29th.  This day commemorates photographs, the camera, and their invention.  A camera is an irreplaceable tool used to record and replicate memories, events, and people/places.  Before the invention of the camera, the only resource to document a vision was a painting.  There are very few who can perfectly capture the image of a person or a place in a drawing. The power of a camera provided many with a simple, inexpensive and fast solution.
George Eastman, also known as “The Father of Photography,” brought the camera to the masses.  While he did not invent the camera, he did invent many additions that improved the use, ease, and production of the camera, making it widely available to homes around the world.
The original camera was large and bulky but has now evolved into something that can be as small as a pen.  Cameras have many features and variations, making them appealing to men and women of all ages for personal and professional use.
HOW TO OBSERVE
To celebrate National Camera Day, snap a picture of something or someone you enjoy and cherish the memory.
