Weather & Predictions ~ Picture of the Day ~ First Vending Machine ~ Gazpacho Pasta Salad ~ Gar Austin ~ National Cream-Filled Donut Day

Good 51º clear sky morning.

These shorter days bug me. The sun doesn't come over the mountain until about 7:55am. Sorry, I am a sunshine person. Makes me happy!

So, the sun came out and we topped at 93º.

Here are the predictions for our area for Sunday through Tuesday....

Yesterday I stayed home and didn't go out among the crazies that the full moon and Friday the 13th hatched!

Picture of the Day....  hmmmmmm..........

Interesting........
In 1888, the Thomas Adams Gum Company introduced the very first vending machines to the United States. The vending machines were installed on the elevated subway platforms in New York City and sold Tutti-Fruiti gum. The machine itself was very primitive compared to the vending machines of the twenty-first century. It included a coin slot, a shelf for the product to be distributed to the consumer, and two levers that when pushed down, activated the system inside. Soon, vending machines were available that offered almost everything, including cigarettes, hot meals, and stamps.

Gazpacho Pasta Salad....

Fresh cucumber, tomatoes, and herbs add color and flavor to this salad. Inspired by popular Spanish flavors, this pasta salad will leave your taste buds wanting "mas! mas! mas!" (That's "more! more! more!")

  • 1/2 pound elbow macaroni or any medium pasta shape
  • 4 ripe tomatoes seeded and chopped
  • 1/2 cup sliced scallion
  • 1/2 cup cucumber, peeled, seeded, and chopped
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Dash of hot pepper sauce
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cayenne pepper to taste
  • 1 (6 ounce) can spicy vegetable juice
  1. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta to desired doneness; drain and place in a large bowl.

  2. Add remaining ingredients and combine until thoroughly mixed.

  3. Cover and chill at least 1 hour, then mix again before serving.

Sadly our Sheriff's Department lost a great guy on the 11th... Gar Austin, former Chief for LASD and retired. He was so nice and kind. His son Jon was one of Jerry's BFF's and they worked together. RIP GAR. ♥

National Cream-Filled Donut Day on September 14th recognizes one of our favorite foods.
Cream-filled donuts come in so many varieties. If you aren’t a fan of fillings in your pastries, consider trying some of the latest flavors. Not only have bakeries become creative with their fillings, but they’ve also branched out with their toppings, too.
Some of the top cream-filled donuts we love (in no particular order) are:
  • Boston Cream
  • Bavarian Cream
  • Chocolate Cream
  • Lemon Cream
  • Custard
  • Caramel Cream
  • Strawberry Cream
  • Vanilla Cream
  • Peanut butter cream
  • Holland Cream
  • Fluffernutter Cream
  • Orange Vanilla Cream
  • Nutella Cream
  • Marshmallow Cream
  • Maple Cream
  • Espresso Cream
  • Coconut Cream
Now, if this list doesn’t make you run out and fill an order for at least a dozen, keep reading. And, there’s not a sprinkle to be found.
Add bacon crumbles to the maple cream. If you order an espresso cream, ask for a hazelnut drizzle. Of course, if you’re in an autumn frame of mind, sprinkle it with pumpkin spice and sugar. Orange vanilla cream makes an excellent dessert when topped with vanilla ice cream. Serve the caramel cream with coffee and cozy up with a good book. When it comes to the marshmallow cream, the obvious toppings are chocolate and graham cracker crumbs.
My favorite donut shop is Krispy Kreme. YUUUUMMMM!!!
