Interesting about biscuit dough....

In 1930, a Louisville, Kentucky, baker named Lively B. Willoughby came up with a way to store pre-made biscuit dough in a cardboard tube that could be stored in a refrigerator. After a few failed attempts that resulted in packaging explosions and biscuit dough being scraped off the ceiling, Willoughby developed a technique that successfully packaged ready-to-bake, proportioned biscuit dough. It was done by preparing the baking dough, cut into proportioned size, packaged them in aluminum foil, put them in an Epsom salt lined cardboard tube, glued lids on both ends, and refrigeration at 40 F degrees. The packaged biscuit dough retained its freshness up to three months. Out of his small bakery, Willoughby marketed his biscuits dough in the packaged tubes as Ye Old Kentuckie Buttermilk Biscuits for about six months.

Since Willoughby's invention occurred during the middle of the Great Depression, he needed financial support to further promote his packaged biscuits. Willoughby sold his patent to the Ballard & Ballard Flour Co. of Louisville, Kentucky in 1931 which held the patent until 1948. In 1951, Pillsbury purchased Ballard & Ballard Flour Co. Pillsbury expanded the biscuit product line and continued to use the same Willoughby process. The acquisition of Ballard & Ballard Flour Company and the beginning of packaged biscuit dough in a tube become one of Pillsbury's most important and profitable product lines for the next 50 years until it was purchased by General Mills in 2001.

So, here's a recipe using refrigerated biscuits!

Breakfast Biscuit Buns

1 pound bacon
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1 can (16.3oz) Pillsbury Grands Buttermilk Biscuits
8 eggs
1/2 cup shredded (smoked) Cheddar cheese

  • Heat oven to 350°. In 10-inch skillet, cook bacon over medium-high heat 10 to 12 minutes or until bacon is crisp; remove from pan to paper towels, and crumble. Remove all but 1 tablespoon bacon drippings from skillet. Add onion to skillet; cook and stir about 2 minutes or until onion is tender. In small bowl, mix onion and bacon. Set aside.
  •
Spray 8 jumbo muffin cups or 8 (6-oz) custard cups with cooking spray. Separate dough into 8 biscuits. Place 1 biscuit in each muffin cup, pressing dough three-fourths of the way up sides of cups. Divide bacon mixture evenly among biscuit cups; crack an egg over each. Top with cheese.
  •
Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until egg whites and yolks are firm, but not runny. Run small knife around cups to loosen. Serve immediately.
 ***
  • Make a batch of these ahead. Cover and refrigerate. When ready to serve; reheat in 350° oven about 5 minutes or until hot.
  • Smoked Gouda can be used instead of smoked Cheddar, or if you prefer a cheese without the smoke flavor, substitute regular Cheddar, Gouda or Swiss.

Yesterday was weird.... no critters here! No turkeys, no deer, no geese, and no birds! Then about 1:15 I finally heard the Blue Jays, 2 of them, and the Woodpeckers (5 of them). Finally about 4:30  8 of the Tom Turkeys showed up. Mike said it had to do with the full moon and being like the sun at night. Hmmmmm..... interesting.

All I know. Nuff said. Happy Sunday. Ciao.

One of America’s favorites, National Double Cheeseburger Day recognizes a food icon savored across the United States.
Hamburger.  Seasoned ground beef, grilled and placed between two slices of bread or a bun. Top with sauteed onions, peppers, pickles, sliced onions, and cheese. Add condiments such as ketchup, mustard, or mayo. Any one of these combinations would create a modern American version a hamburger.
Now, double the patties and the cheese. The celebration requires it.
While the day is about the double cheeseburger, that doesn’t mean you can’t add your favorite toppings. When it comes to adding some tanginess to a burger, a few ingredients never fail. Goat cheese brightens a burger every time. But if you’re looking for a crispness, too, add some creamy coleslaw instead. Another option in this category is the reliable tartar sauce.
If you like to bring the heat, you can look to your cheeses. Pepper jack is a mild way of adding some spice. However, if you prefer to test the limits, fresh sliced jalapenos or habaneros will also do the trick.
It is most likely that the hamburger sandwich first appeared in the 19th or early 20th centuries, but there is much controversy over its origin. Over the years, the hamburger has become a culinary icon in the United States.
And Americans love their burgers! Restaurants dedicated to making them just right have been in business for generations. Even those who refrain from red meat don’t hesitate to find a way to enjoy a juicy burger. Whether the burger is charbroiled, grilled or barely kisses the heat, there’s a flavor for you.
So when something this delicious exists, double it! Then celebrate it!

Today is also...........
Wife Appreciation Day on the third Sunday in September provides an opportunity for spouses to show appreciation to their wives.
The relationship between a husband and a wife takes balance. Every day, spouses do things for each other, sometimes without thinking. Other times, work and responsibilities get in the way. This observance offers a way to remind husbands to show a little appreciation to their wives.
This particular observance sets aside time for couples who have no children. Not every woman is a mother, either by chance or choice. Since so many holidays celebrate families with children, this day offers a day for those who remained childless.
Couples may choose to celebrate the day traditionally with a gift of flowers, perfume, jewelry or clothing. However, other options include a day at a spa, tickets to a show or dinner at a nice restaurant.  A foot massage and cooking breakfast or dinner at home can also say, “Thank you for all the things you do every day. I appreciate them.”

GOOD morning. I don't think I could eat a double hamburger- but Tahoe would gladly help with leftovers.
What a sad day this was in 1935.

Funny sign. Now that I smile, I can face the day.

Oh come on you two! You know you could eat a Double Double, no problem. I have often commented if I wanted to be a pig I could even eat two! :) They are that yummy.

Thank goodness for canned biscuits! I use them all the time as they are a staple in my frig. Especially handy for chicken n dumplins. :) I have a can of Grands in there now so I am going on a search of your recipes for tonight's dinner.
