Dark ~ Throw Back Thursday ~ Rain ~ My Mountain ~ Deer ~ Yucca ~ Red Hot Pokers ~ Picture of the Day ~ American Gothic ~ Asparagus Grilled Cheese Sandwich ~ National Biographer's Day

Good 49º dark cloudy morning. We had rain on and off yesterday and some in the night. Less than 1/4" so far.

Throw Back Thursday.... Mrs. Rector and I, my 5th grade teacher... Sierra Park Grammar School in El Sereno (Los Angeles 90032)

The rain started early yesterday and I heard a lot of gobbling out back. Looked and Mr. Turkey was taking refuge from the rain on my patio! Sometimes those dumb birds get smart!

My mountain....

A couple deer were out when I went to take the mountain picture....

My yucca, the desert laugh, is blooming....

And my red hot pokers are blooming too....

Picture of the Day......

Interesting.....

In the painting, American Gothic, the man is holding a pitchfork. In August 1930, Grant Wood, an American painter with European training, was driven around Eldon, Iowa, by a young painter from Eldon, John Sharp. Looking for inspiration, Wood noticed the Dibble House, a small white house built in the Carpenter Gothic architectural style. At that time, Wood first sketched the house on the back of an envelope.
Man and woman with stern expession stand side-by-side. The man holds a pitch fork.
In the fall of 1930, Wood entered a painting in a competition at the Art Institute of Chicago. The judges dismissed it as a trifling "comic valentine," but a powerful museum patron urged them to reconsider. So, they awarded Wood a third place bronze medal and $300. The Art Institute then acquired the painting for its collection. Now, the painting with the man and pitchfork is one of the most famous images in 20th century American art, and has been widely parodied in American popular culture.
Wood worked on until February 1942 when he died of pancreatic cancer at age 50.

Asparagus Grilled Cheese Sandwich...

  • 6-8 stalk asparagus (trimmed and cleaned)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 teaspoons grainy mustard
  • 1 slice of cheese... swiss, mozzarella, jack, or whatever you like
  • 2 slices of bread
  • 1 tablespoon butter (room temperature)
  1. Toss the asparagus in the oil, salt and pepper.
  2. Arrange the asparagus in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  3. Roast in a preheated 400º oven until tender, about 10-30 minutes. (Note: Roasting time can vary greatly depending on how thick your asparagus is.)
  4. Butter the outside of each slice of bread, spread the mustard on the inside, sprinkle half of the cheese on one slice of bread, top with the asparagus, the remaining cheese and finally the other slice of bread.
  5. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat, add the sandwich and grill until golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 2-4 minutes.

National Biographer’s Day commemorates the anniversary of the first meeting of Samuel Johnson and his biographer James Boswell in London, England on May 16, 1763, and honors all biographers.
A biography is a written account of another person’s life.
Famous poet, essayist, literary critic, editor and lexicographer, Johnson was also a biographer. According to Johnson, the best biographers were those who ate, drank and “lived in social intercourse” with those about whom they wrote. If that were true, his best biography would be An Account of the Life of Mr. Richard Savage, Son of the Earl Rivers which was published in 1744.
Applying this same rule, Scots-born James Boswell met his friend Samuel Johnson at a bookshop near Covent Garden. Nearly 30 years later he publishes The Life of Johnson, which becomes the most celebrated English biography.

Happy Biographers Day! Last night I watched an amazing movie- The Professor and the Madman, based on the 1998 biographical account of Professor James Murray, the man who leads the team writing the original Oxford Dictionary, written by Simon Winchester. Sean Penn was magnificently believable as a madman.

Asparagus in a grilled cheese sandwich- be still my heart. My asparagus patch will be mature enough next year for me to enjoy an extended season of their green tenderness.

God bless you for today's post.

I love reading biographies of famous people. Especially auto biographies.

I love asparagus but can't imagine liking it in a sandwich.

Last night I made a Mexican meat loaf. I don't remember if I got it from your blog. I always copy and save the ones I think the family will enjoy. Well wonders will never cease! They loved it and and John who loves my meatloaf says he liked this one even better. :)

Cute cute pic of the day! :)

I suspected it was. John really liked it but he had a couple of great suggestions to add to it. I really meant to add onions but forgot. He said to add onions and the little green mild chilis. I like that idea! :)
