Good 60º smokey morning.
Yesterday we topped at 92º and the smoke stayed horrible all day. By 7pm it
was so bad I couldn't even see "my mountain" (Fielder Mtn.. looking south)
The sun was setting....

The
scientific name of the Eastern Kingbird is Tyrannus
tyrannus, or
king of kings, quite the title for a bird smaller than a robin. But this little
dynamo attacks any larger species that ventures too close to the kingbird’s
nest, following and harassing until the intruder leaves the territory, then
returning to a jaunty treetop perch with triumphant sputtering cries. Not even
the mighty Bald Eagle is immune to the kingbird’s
wrath.
Yesterday my pal Karen's son, Senator Herman Baertschiger, was
on KAJO radio for an interview on his stand on the US Dept of Forestry, and
Oregon Dept of Forestry in regards to the Chetco Bar Fire that has burned nearly
100,000 acres because of the department's policy on "let it burn". This fire
started from lightening in July and at first was 1/2 acre. Just one retardant
drop would have stopped it. But, nooooo... "let it burn" during the hottest
(100º + temperatures and no chance of rain) time of the year. I wrote the
Senator a note thanking him for his input.
The Senator knows a bit about firefighting, as he founded the
HB Forestry LLC wildland fire fighting company almost 40 years
ago......
I also wrote the Oregon Dept of Forestry giving them my input.
Here is what the KAJO page looks like...
Now you can go there www.kajo.com and in the top right corner it says
"Listen", click on that, and you can get the live streaming.... Then to operate
other things on your computer just use the "minimize" button ( -) in the top
right of the site. This station is in Grants Pass. The live streaming gives
local and national news and music. Really neat!!!
Later Dude and I took a ride into town so I could pick up some pain meds for his hip. He's still limping very badly. The med is Meloxicam ... anti inflammatory and pain relief.
I gave him some when I got home and he improved yesterday with less
limping. YEAH!

August 23rd
National Spongecake Day
Here are today’s five thing to know about Spongecake:
- During the renaissance, Italian cooks became famous for their baking skills and were hired by households in both England and France.
- The new items that they introduced were called “biscuits,” though they were the forerunner of what we now consider to be sponge cake.
- Gervase Markham (1568-1637), English poet and author, recorded the earliest sponge cake recipe in English in 1615.
- These sponge cakes were most likely thin, crisp cakes (more like modern cookies).
- By the middle of the 18th century, yeast had fallen into disuse as a raising agent for cakes in favor of beaten eggs.
