Good 23º morning. I'm whining about it... but all you guys in the 40º - 50º
weather spots, you have no business complaining. You know who you are! Thank
goodness for long underwear!
Yesterday was Bloody Mary Day so.....
The Rose Parade yesterday: My friend Judy Nichols Seielstad Houston, whose
mom owned June Nichols Dance Studio in Alhambra, rode on the Alhambra float one
year. That was such fun seeing her. I do have a picture somewhere! She was in a
bathing suit! Burrrrrr..... and yes, she said she was freezing! She died a
couple of years ago, and seeing the Alhambra float made me sad. She is missed.
BUT....on the other hand...
THE Combined Marine Corps Band was AWESOME. I sang
the Hymn along with the band and smiled and cried. Then that soldier from
Afghanistan surprising his wife and son in the middle of Colorado Boulevard was
the real tear jerker!
That was a real treat, but the "wedding" was a strange note.
The 'Bruise' watched the parade with me from his favorite spot....
The Rose Bowl game was good. Stanford outdid Wisconsin 20-14!!
Monday at the NY Eve gathering Dale had printed out my "stitched" picture
of the snow and the barn. He has a printer that prints 'over size" and photo
paper that is about 8½"x23" ... That is so cool. I will get a frame for it!
Thanks Dale!
And then some AWESOME news... my high school friend, Greg Lundell and his
bride Becky became grandparents on New Year's Eve! Mary Katherine was born at
11:06pm! Welcome Baby Mary. Such a deal, born just less than an hour before
midnight and a nice deduction for 2012 taxes!
On top of being DARLING!!!
My friend Trish sent me the following recipe. She makes Hoppin' John on New
Years Day and found this easy version...
1 pound sage pork sausage
1 6oz. pkg uncooked long grain and wild rice mix with seasoning
packet
2 15oz cans black-eyed peas, drained
2 14oz cans diced tomatoes with liquid
2 cups water
2 14oz cans chicken broth
Cook sausage. In large pot mix the cooked sausage with seasonings,
black-eyed peas, tomatoes, broth, and water. Bring to boil, reduce heat to
simmer, cook 20 minutes. Season to taste with salt. This makes a 'soup'
...
So.......................... I did the following......
I cooked some chorizo in the frying pan. Cooked some rice blend in my 35
year old rice cooker. Took the dried black-eyed peas and boiled them for an
hour, added the wild rice and cooked on simmer for another 45 minutes. Mixed all
of that with a can of diced tomatoes, mushrooms, black beans.... Then in the pan
I cooked the chorizo in I sauteéd some yellow bell pepper and voilá ... Sue's
Hoppin' Bill ~! (LOL Bill!)

I'm sorry I missed the parade. Bet it is somewher on the Internet. The Marine surprise to wife and child- that is the sort of reality TV I could enjoy.
Sue,
Yes, the parade was a real tear jerker! I cried several times during the day when talking about the "reunion". Yes, the wedding was rather weird. It was sure short and sweet and I'll bet the bride was freezing up there in her strapless gown!
Normally the sun is shining and warm on NY day but it was cold for So. Cal.
Personally I hate that we are going to warm up. I am loving the cold because that's the way winter SHOULD be! I like to bundle up!
Glad you made the Hoppin Bill? Tradition says that you will have good luck this year because you ate that. :)
My ham and white northern beans was yummy. My family isn't too thrilled with soups for dinner even tho it was loaded with meat and goodies so out to the freezer I go to see what's for din din tonight!
Have fun at your buffet luncheon!
XO Trisha
