Weather ~ Picture of the Day ~ Heaviest Human ~ Frontier Chicken and Noodle Casserole ~ Alex Corsaro ~ National Tortellini Day

Good 39º it POURED rain last night morning.

Yesterday we topped at 48º.

Picture of the Day... a super skinny apartment building in Japan...YIKES!

Interesting about the heaviest human....

Jon Brower Minnoch (September 29, 1941 – September 10, 1983) was an American man who, at his peak weight, was the heaviest human being ever recorded, weighing 1,400 lbs.

At the age of 12, Minnoch weighed 294 lbs with an estimated height of 5 ft 7 inches and by age 22 he was 6 ft 1 inches in height and weighed 500 lbs.  At his heaviest, he was frequently referred to as 'the thickest man in the land.

Minnoch's weight continued to increase steadily until his hospitalization in March 1978 at age 36 due to cardiac and respiratory failure. That same year, he broke a record for the greatest difference in weight between a married couple when he married his 110-lb  wife Jeannette and later fathered two children. Minnoch was diagnosed with massive generalized edema, a condition in which the body accumulates excess extracellular fluid. Upon his hospital admission, it was estimated by endocrinologist Robert Schwartz that over 900 lbs of his overall body mass was retained fluid.

Jon was discharged from the hospital after 16 months on a strict diet of 1,200 cal per day. He weighed 476 lbs, having lost approximately 924 lbs, the second largest human weight loss ever documented. However, he was readmitted to the hospital just over a year later in October 1981, after his weight increased to 952 lbs. With his underlying condition of edema being incurable and difficult to treat, the decision was made to discontinue treatment, and he died 23 months later on September 10, 1983, aged 41. At the time of his death, he weighed 798 lbs with a Body Mass Index of 105.3.

We don't know if Davy Crockett had meals like this, but we're sure he'd have loved it, and your family will, too. Frontier Chicken & Noodle Casserole is robust and delicious, and the simplest dinner you could imagine

  • 2 cups cooked fine egg noodles
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 (10.25-ounce) can cream of chicken soup
  • 1 cup crushed potato chips

  1. Preheat oven to 350º. Coat a 2-quart casserole dish with cooking spray.

  2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except potato chips; mix well. Spoon mixture into prepared casserole dish and top with crushed chips.

  3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until golden and heated through.

Pasta lovers will enjoy a traditional stuffed pasta during National Tortellini Day on February 13th!
Tortellini is a signature dish from the Italian region of Bologna, where they claim to have created this stuffed pasta packed with flavor. Ravioli, tortellini, and tortellacci are all part of the same family of stuffed pasta. The most common fillings for tortellini are ham, white meat, and Parmesan cheese.
Members of an organization called The Learned Order of the Tortellini in the city of Bologna wear special hats to their meetings that are red and gold and shaped like tortellini. They also wear a ribbon, around their neck that has a gold tortellini hanging on it.  The Learned Order of the Tortellini has a large membership dedicated to the preservation of the traditional tortellini.
There are many ways to prepare a tortellini dish.  You may want to top it with a cheese sauce, cream sauce, pesto or tomato sauce, or follow one of the thousands of cooking blogs available for a great tortellini recipe.

Picture of the Day... good friends!

Interesting about Shirley Temple .....

On February 10, 2014, Shirley Temple died at age 85. She had a long career as one of the most popular movie stars during the Great Depression and as a diplomat in later life. Here are 5  things you probably didn’t know about Shirley Temple...

Temple’s Perfect Curls Took a Lot of WorkPoor little Shirley Temple had to sleep with her hair set in 56 carefully placed curlers every night to achieve her look for the cameras. She reportedly didn't love the hairstyle, but understand the value of her trademark look. In 1938 Temple visited the Roosevelts at their Hyde Park estate in New York. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt asked the Hollywood icon to go swimming with her, but Temple declined "because of my hair."

She Was the Youngest Performer to Ever Win an OscarThe Juvenile Oscar was established in 1935 to recognize performers under the age of 18 who deserved to win but would have trouble competing with their adult counterparts. Shirley Temple won the first of these awards in 1935 at age six for her role in Bright Eyes. The trophy itself was a miniature of the Oscar at seven inches tall, and was discontinued in 1961 after it was presented to Hayley Mills for her starring role in Pollyanna.

Temple Was Considered for The Wizard of OzIn 1938, the producer of The Wizard of Oz, Arthur Freed held a meeting with Shirley Temple to talk about her headlining the movie. Unfortunately, the blockbuster movie was being made by MGM, and her employer 20th Century Fox refused to allow her to make the movie. In a memoir penned by Temple, she claimed that Freed exposed himself during their meeting, which further dissuaded her from taking the part. In any event, it was obvious that Judy Garland had a much more impressive singing voice, and it was she who was eventually cast to play Dorothy in the movie.

She Apparently Hated Her DrinkA Shirley Temple is a non-alcoholic mixed drink traditionally made with ginger ale and a splash of grenadine, garnished with a maraschino cherry. Temple herself was not a fan of the drink, as she told NPR in a 1986 interview: "The saccharine sweet, icky drink? Yes, well... those were created in the probably middle 1930s by the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood and I had nothing to do with it. But, all over the world, I am served that. People think it's funny. I hate them. Too sweet!" In 1988 Temple brought a lawsuit to prevent a bottled soda version using her name from happening.ad

She Became a Diplomat Later in LifeTemple was appointed as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations by President Richard Nixon and then served under President Gerald Ford as the U.S. ambassador to Ghana. Later, she worked under President Reagan in the State Department, and was appointed the U.S. ambassador to Czechoslovakia by President George H.W. Bush. Her one bid for an elected office was unsuccessful: Temple, a Republican, lost the race for the California seat in House of Representatives to Congressman Pete McCloskey in 1967 by around 19,000 votes.

When summertime comes around, you're looking for something fresh and new; a break from those traditional deli salads you had so much of at church potlucks. Try this Cauliflower & Broccoli Salad! With the sweet burst of cranberry, and the crunch of crispy bacon, this broccoli salad is just what summer needs.

  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 4 bacon slices, cooked crispy and crumbled
  • 2 cups fresh cauliflower florets, blanched (see Tip)
  • 2 cups fresh broccoli florets, blanched (see Tip)
  • 1/4 cup slivered red onion
  • 3/4 cup salted cashew halves, coarsely chopped
  • 3/4 cup dried cranberries

  1. In a small bowl, whisk mayonnaise and vinegar; set aside.

  2. In a large bowl, combine remaining ingredients. Toss with mayonnaise mixture until evenly coated.

  3. Cover and chill at least 1 hour before serving.

***Test Kitchen Tip: To blanch the cauliflower and broccoli, place florets in a pot of boiling water and let them simmer 1 minute; drain immediately. Place them in a bowl of ice water to stop them from cooking. Drain well and they’re ready to use. Or if you’re short on time, feel free to start with frozen cauliflower and broccoli florets. Just make sure you thaw and drain them first

February 12th.is Abraham Lincoln's actual birth date. However, in modern times President Lincoln and all of the U.S. Presidents, are celebrated on President's Day.
Every American knows President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. "Honest Abe", as he was commonly known, was born in the wilderness country of Hardin County, Kentucky on February 12, 1809.
Abraham Lincoln became president in 1861. Although he hated war, he was drawn into it as he believed it was the only was to save the nation, after the southern states declared their secession from the Union.
In addition to serving as president during the civil war and saving the Union,  Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery in the U.S. forever. He also wrote and gave The Gettysburg Address, memorializing the bloodiest and most important battle of the Civil War. Gettysburg proved to be the turning point of the war.
Shortly after the war ended, Abraham Lincoln became the first U.S. President to be assassinated. He was shot and mortally wounded on Good Friday, April 14, 1865 by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theater.

Picture of the Day... impossible building!!

Interesting about the statue atop the Washington DC Capital Building...

The prominent statue atop the Capitol building is often unnoticed due to the quick pace of the capital city. The architect of the building Thomas Walter held the idea of this statue as a part of his original design for a new cast-iron dome. The crowning feature of the dome stands 19 feet 6 inches tall, and weighs approximately 15,000 pounds.

The bronze statue itself was made by artist Thomas Crawford and was completed in 1863. The Statue of Freedom is a classical female figure with long, flowing hair wearing a helmet with a crest composed of an eagle’s head and feathers. She wears a classical dress secured with a brooch inscribed "U.S." Over it is draped a heavy, flowing, toga-like robe fringed with fur and decorative spheres. Her right hand rests upon the hilt of a sheathed sword wrapped in a scarf; in her left hand she holds a laurel wreath of victory and the shield of the United States with 13 stripes.

The helmet is encircled by nine stars. Ten bronze points tipped with platinum are attached to her headdress, shoulders, and shield for protection from lightning. She stands on a cast-iron pedestal topped with a globe encircled with the motto E Pluribus Unum. (translation:  "Out of many, one") The lower part of the pedestal is decorated with fasces (symbols of the authority of government) and wreaths. The pedestal is 18-1/2 feet high and almost doubles the total height. The crest of Freedom’s headdress rises 288 feet above the East Front Plaza.

National Inventors’ Day honors inventors of the past, the creators of the present, and encourages the architects of the future. On February 11th, National Inventors’ Day celebrates the genius behind design. It also dives into the history behind some of our most unusual inventions.

What do Ermal Fraze, Thomas Adams, Melitta Bentz, Patricia Beth, and Stephen Perry all have in common? They are recognized annually on February 11th, along with the Wright brothers, Thomas Edison, George Washington Carver, and Elisha Otis.

Thanks to inventors, we can safely ride in an elevator, have a well-lit room at the flip of a switch, speak to someone on the other side of the world or efficiently pump lotion from a bottle. Many inventors go their whole life without recognition for their creations, while others are household names. Nearly everything around us results from someone tinkering in their garage, laboratory, or basement trying to find a solution to a problem.

Some inventions may be happy accidents by an observant person; the microwave oven, penicillin, sticky notes, and bubble wrap may never have made their way into their current use if it were not for sharp or persistent inventors.

The proverb “Necessity is the mother of invention” says a lot about how inventors look at life. They are a progressive, forward-thinking bunch. Where would we be without pacemakers, traffic signals, rubber bands, or coffee filters?

Though there are some inventions that we may be better off without. A DVD re-winder doesn’t quite fit the necessary criteria. Or, they are otherwise too impractical. For example, tugging around a stroller fridge for your watermelon along with the cooler and beach umbrella seems to be a bit of overkill. Still, without inventors, the world would be downright dull and much more challenging.

Inventors should keep track of their ideas, processes, ingredients, and components. Protect your inventions and get your unique creations patented.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Inventors around the country, take a bow. Keep tinkering. Keep seeking a cure, a fix, and improvements to our everyday life. Take time to recognize an inventor and encourage them to keep creating the next great invention. Other inventive ways to celebrate the day include:

  • Read about inventors and inventions that changed the way we look at the world today. We recommend Mistakes that Worked by Charlotte Jones, The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation by Jon Gertner, and Five Notable Inventors by Wade Hudson.
  • Learn about the patent process and how to protect your ideas. Put your ideas to work for you!
  • Watch documentaries about your favorite inventions. You might find out something about the inventor you never knew!

NATIONAL INVENTORS’ DAY HISTORY

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first National Inventors’ Day and takes place every year on Thomas Edison’s birthday.
