Today is Passover. The Jewish people celebrate Passover as a commemoration of their liberation over 3,300 years ago by God from slavery in ancient Egypt that was ruled by the Pharaohs, and their birth as a nation under the leadership of Moses. It commemorates the story of the Exodus as described in the Hebrew Bible especially in the Book of Exodus, in which the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt.

In Israel, Passover is the seven-day holiday of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, with the first and last days observed as legal holidays and as holy days involving abstention from work, special prayer services, and holiday meals; the intervening days are known as Chol HaMoed ("Weekdays of the Festival"). Diaspora Jews historically observed the festival for eight days, and most still do. Reform and Reconstructionist Jews and Israeli Jews, wherever they are, usually observe the holiday over seven days. The reason for this extra day is due to enactment of the Sages. It is thought by many scholars that Jews outside of Israel could not be certain if their local calendars fully conformed to practice of the Temple at Jerusalem, so they added an extra day. But as this practice only attaches to certain (major) sacred days, others posit the extra day may have been added to accommodate people who had to travel long distances to participate in communal worship and ritual practices; or the practice may have evolved as a compromise between conflicting interpretations of Jewish Law regarding the calendar; or it may have evolved as a safety measure in areas where Jews were commonly in danger, so that their enemies would not be certain on which day to attack.

A symbol of the Passover holiday is matzo, an unleavened flatbread made solely from flour and water which is continually worked from mixing through baking, so that it is not allowed to rise. Matzo may be made by machine or by hand; the latter type of matzo, called shmura matzo ("watched" or "guarded" matzo), is the bread of preference for the Passover Seder in Orthodox Jewish communities. The Torah contains a Divine commandment to eat matzo, specifically, on the first night of Passover and to eat only unleavened bread (in practice, matzo) during the entire week of Passover. Consequently the eating of matzo figures prominently in the Passover Seder.

The name says it all; these chicken drumsticks are delicious! It's 'cause we've coated our Delicious Drumsticks with a breadcrumb mixture that's loaded with yummy seasonings. These drumsticks are going to fly off the plate!

 

• 1 cup bread crumbs
• 2 teaspoons onion powder
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• 3/4 teaspoon dry mustard
• 3/4 teaspoon paprika
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
• 3 1/2 pounds chicken drumsticks
• 1/2 cup butter, melted

 

1. Preheat oven to 350º. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
    
2. In a medium bowl, combine bread crumbs, onion powder, garlic powder, dry mustard, paprika, salt, cayenne pepper, and parsley.
    
3. In a large bowl, place chicken and drizzle with butter; toss until evenly coated, then dredge in bread crumb mixture. Place chicken on baking sheet. 
    
4. Bake 50 to 55 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink in center.

Gold Star Spouses Day on April 5th honors the surviving loved ones of military service members who died while serving their country.

The day offers remembrance for the spouses and their families and a time of recognition of their sacrifices. Many communities and organizations hold events showing support for Gold Star families on this day. Through ceremonies, teas, memorial races, and luncheons, they honor and remember fallen warriors.

The loss of our service members extends beyond the battlefield and their service to their country. They leave behind grieving wives and husbands who become members of an exclusive community no one asks to join. Our support, understanding, and respect are the least we can provide in return as a nation.

HOW TO OBSERVE

• Attend a local event or volunteer with a veterans group.
• If you know a Gold Star family, stay connected.
• Attend memorials near you in honor of fallen warriors.
• Support Gold Star families by including them in memorial decisions.

GOLD STAR SPOUSES DAY HISTORY

World War I and Army Captain Robert L. Queissner paved the way for Gold Star families. National Gold Star Mother’s Day was designated on June 23, 1936, by a joint congressional resolution to occur on the Last Sunday in September. In 2011, President Barack Obama amended the day to “Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day.”

In 2010, the first Gold Star Wives Day was observed in December. Then in 2012, the U.S. Senate designated Gold Star Wives Day to be recognized each year on April 5th. The Senate later changed to be more inclusive of all spouses, and the name of the day is often used interchangeably.

The nonprofit organization Gold Star Wives, Inc. welcomes all spouses.
