Interesting about apartments.........

An apartment (American English), flat (British EnglishIndian EnglishSouth African English), or unit (Australian English), is a self-contained housing unit (a type of residential real estate) that occupies part of a building, generally on a single storey. There are many names for these overall buildings, see below. The housing tenure of apartments also varies considerably, from large-scale public housing, to owner occupancy within what is legally a condominium (strata title or commonhold), to tenants renting from a private landlord (see leasehold estate).

Terminology

The term apartment is favored in North America (although in some Canadian cities, flat is used for a unit which is part of a house containing two or three units, typically one to a floor). In the UK, the term apartment is more usual in professional real estate and architectural circles where otherwise the term flat is used commonly, but not exclusively, for an apartment on a single level (hence a 'flat' apartment).

In some countries, the word "unit" is a more general term referring to both apartments and rental business suites. The word 'unit' is generally used only in the context of a specific building.

"Mixed-use buildings" combine commercial and residential uses within the same structure. Typically, mixed-use buildings consist of businesses on the lower floors (often retail in street-facing ground floor and supporting subterranean levels) and residential apartments on the upper floors.

By size of the building

Apartment buildings are multi-story buildings where three or more residences are contained within one structure. Such a building may be called an apartment buildingapartment complexflat complexblock of flatstower blockhigh-rise or, occasionally, mansion block (in British English), especially if it consists of many apartments for rent. A high-rise apartment building is commonly referred to as a residential towerapartment tower, or block of flats in Australia.

high-rise building is defined by its height differently in various jurisdictions. It may be only residential, in which case it might also be called a tower block, or it might include other functions such as hotels, offices, or shops. There is no clear difference between a tower block and a skyscraper, although a building with fifty or more stories is generally considered a skyscraper. High-rise buildings became possible with the invention of the elevator (lift) and cheaper, more abundant building materials. Their structural system usually is made of reinforced concrete and steel.

low-rise building and mid-rise buildings have fewer storeys, but the limits are not always clear. Emporis defines a low-rise as "an enclosed structure below 115 feet which is divided into regular floor levels." The city of Toronto defines a mid-rise as a building between 4 and 12 stories.

Sue's best scallops
This was a Rachael Ray recipe I changed. She used more capers, which made it too salty. She also used vermouth and I like the lemon juice and the butter! Cut this recipe in half for 2 or if there is just 1 of you, then you'll have leftovers! This was a very favorite recipe of Jerry's and mine!

Prep time: 5 minutes  Cook time: 9 minutes  4 servings

3 T extra virgin olive oil
1 shallot, chopped
2 14oz cans quartered artichoke hearts in water, drained
salt and pepper
1/4 cup parsley leaves, chopped
1 T. capers, drained
16 sea scallops
1/2 cup lemon juice
3-4 pats of butter

Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium high heat. Add two turns of olive oil, about 2 T. of chopped shallots. Cook shallots in oil a minute or so, add artichoke hearts and toss to heat through. Season with salt and pepper and combine with parsley and capers. Transfer the artichokes/shallots to a serving dish.

Wipe out the pan to heat, raising heat a bit. Season drained and trimmed scallops with salt and pepper. Add 1 turn of olive oil to a very hot pan and immediately place scallops in pan. Sear the scallops in a single layer, causing them to caramelize, 2 minutes on each side. Add the lemon juice and butter pats and allow it to reduce a bit, 1-2 minutes. Arrange the scallops over the top of the artichoke hearts and serve.

National Hug A Plumber Day on April 25th recognizes those who come to our rescue when pipes leak or drains are clogged.

Plumbers have kept the water flowing since ancient Rome. Whether it is a minor leak to a major clog, a plumber will have the right tool for the job. They also help us install the right pipes and plumbing types when building a house or new business. They’re the water specialists – designing plumbing systems that work when we need it. Thanks to plumbers, we have hot water on demand. Showers come with a variety of options and kitchens provide the ultimate convenience.

Consider how plumbers improve our lives and health in the modern world. Their contributions could be inventions the human race would have a difficult time living without. Given a choice between using only a flush toilet or a smartphone for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

From the moment you wake in the morning to every glass, flush and wash, a plumber makes life easier even if you never have to call one.
