A March 1843 portrait, taken in Washington, D.C., is the oldest known original photo of a U.S. president. The March 1843 daguerreotype is a photo of President John Quincy Adams. It is the earliest-known photograph taken of a United States president. The photo is now a 178-year-old piece of American history. As an invaluable document, this daguerreotype crystallizes a remarkable moment in the history of photography and American politics.
This daguerreotype beats out another surviving photograph taken just a few months later. It is one where Adams sat for a portrait in New York, NY. He later called it "hideous", as reported by the local press. That image is now in the possession of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery.
Adams was more than a decade removed from his presidency when he sat for the March 1843 photo. At that time leading up to the Civil War, Adams used his post in Congress to wage a largely solitary fight against the institution of slavery on the floor of the House of Representatives. He did this despite many efforts to silence him.
It was to one of his friends and allies in Congress, Vermont Representative Horace Everett that Adams gave his March 1843 photograph to, calling Everett his "kinsman" on a note in his own handwriting on the back of the picture. The photograph, showing Adams looking sternly at the camera in a wooden chair, passed through Everett's family for generations.
