Betty White is probably the most beloved actress in Hollywood, and thank God she’s still alive and kickin’! She currently holds the world record for the longest career on television and most recently she voiced the character Bitey White in Toy Story 4. One thing the American people can all agree on is that Betty White is a national treasure who needs to be protected at all costs.

 

 

Interesting about the Dallas Cowboys football team...

 

The Cowboys became the NFL’s first expansion team and was the direct result of the rival AFL.

All through the 1950’s, the NFL rejected the idea of expansion. When the newly formed AFL announced their plans to begin play in 1960, the established league suddenly announced plans to expand into four cities, the first of which would be Dallas. The AFL’s flagship team, the Texans, just happened to also be located in Dallas.

Before any owner, office staff, coaching staff or players were assembled, the team was labeled the "Steers" by the league.  At the owner’s meeting in Miami Beach, Florida, Clint Murchison and Bedford Wynne were awarded the expansion franchise, which was the NFL's hope to squelch the new AFL Dallas entry.

The team was later renamed the "Rangers", which at the time was also the name of the local AAA minor league baseball team. But the baseball team had announced plans to relocate the following season.

The addition of Dallas made an uneven number of clubs in the NFL. Dallas was designated as a “swing team” and played every team once instead of twice each within division opponents.

Tex Schramm was hired away from the Rams to take the post of general manager. In the December 29, 1959 issue of the Dallas Morning News, the headline proclaimed, “Rangers Hire Tom Landry.” Coach Landry, a Texas native and University of Texas graduate, had also been courted by four other pro teams, one being the cross-town Texans.

The Rangers would get a leg up on the Texans when they signed the rival teams' first-round draft choice QB Don Meredith to a personal services contract. With the emergency timing of forming the Dallas entry, the NFL college draft had already occurred. In order to fill the new team’s roster, the NFL held a dispersal draft from players left unprotected from each member team. When the dispersal draft was held, the team was still called the Rangers.

A problem crept up when the baseball Rangers changed Major League affiliates and decided to stay put instead of the planned relocation. The Dallas NFL management didn’t want to create confusion and decided to change nicknames. Although Dallas wasn’t exactly the center of the livestock universe, the nickname "Cowboys" was catchy.

The 1960 Cowboys would become one of pro football’s few winless teams as they drudged on to a 0-11-1 record. But with good draft picks, the team would go on to become one of the NFL’s greatest football teams. At one time, the team went to 18 straight playoff appearances.

The Cowboys would draft one of the greatest running backs in the history of the league when they traded up four slots (via the Steelers) to select Emmitt Smith, III in 1990. Smith would go on to become the NFL’s career rushing leader with 18,355 yards.

The franchise has won five NFL titles (tied: fifth most) - all Super Bowls. The team is known as “The Team of the 1990s” due to their three Super Bowl victories and six division titles.  

One note of interest: in the March 22, 1960 issue of the Dallas Morning News, sports editor Bill Rives wrote a column about the recent name change from Rangers to Cowboys. His column applauded the change in order to avoid confusion with the baseball team. He also penned that at some point, sports writers would eventually abbreviate Dallas’ new nickname to "the Boys." This marked the first time the team was referred to as such.

Ever wonder why hot dogs come in packs of 10 and buns in packs of 8? The truth may never be known, but what are you supposed to do when you have a few extra buns on your hands? Well, that's where our Rancher-Style Cheese Buns come in! Made with leftover hot dog or hamburger buns, this recipe makes a perfect side dish, and no buns about it!

 

• 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
• 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
• 1/2 (1-ounce) packet ranch dressing mix
• 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
• 6 hot dog or hamburger buns, split

 

1. Preheat oven to 400 º.
2. In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, mayonnaise, dressing mix, and cheese; mix well then set aside.
3. Separate rolls in half and place both halves, cut-side-up, on a baking sheet. Spread cream cheese mixture evenly over rolls.  
4. Right before ready to serve, bake 10 to 15 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the edges of the rolls get crispy delicious.

On July 11th, one convenience chain celebrates with specials on National 7-Eleven Day! Conveniently scheduled on 7-11 of each year, the day often features one of their signature items, the Slurpee.

The day focuses on franchise customers. The chain offers discounts and often free Slurpees in their many flavors. Since July is known for its summer heat, the icy cold beverage is a popular choice for cooling off all summer long.

The Slurpee debuted in 1966. While the machine already existed, 7-Eleven modified the machine made by Knedlik, which was used to make the Icee, and then branded and licensed the frozen drink under the name Slurpee. Advertising executive, Bob Stanford, gave the sweet, icy drink the name for the sound it makes as it is sucked through a straw.

The term brain freeze existed before 7-Eleven commandeered it in 1991 to replace ice cream headache or the more technical cold stimulus headache. In 1990, brain freeze was often used as a sports term to refer to athletes who faltered on the field. It also applied to the side effects of medications, especially if they affected our mental capacity. However, immediately after 7-Eleven supposedly redefined the phrase, sports columnists quickly reused the phrase to their benefit. Athletes still had a brain freeze when they made an error, but the columnists cleverly explained the player must have had a Slurpee before taking the field.

Brain Freeze Tips

Of course, brain freeze is inevitable if you drink a frozen beverage too fast. In preparation for the day, we offer a few tips.

1. Put down the drink.
2. Sip from a warmer liquid.
3. If a warmer liquid isn’t available, press your tongue against the roof of your mouth.
4. Cover your mouth and nose with your hand.
5. Breath through your nose. This allows warmer air to circulate through your sinus passages.
6. Return to drinking your Slurpee at a slower pace.

7-ELEVEN DAY HISTORY

7-Eleven first celebrated 7-Eleven Day in 2002. They encouraged customers to visit their local 7-Eleven to enjoy a free beverage as a thank you to the 7-Eleven customers. The company, which is considered the first convenience store which started in 1927 under the name of Southland Ice Company with the logo Totem, because people could conveniently “tote ’em” home their items. It wasn’t until 1947 when the company expanded its hours to from 7 AM to 11 PM that it changed its name.

A pocketful of treats helps ease them into the shot. If bribery doesn’t work, sometimes exercise before the photoshoot will. Another option is misdirection. Focus their attention on another area beyond the lens of the camera, and you might get the picture you want. If all else fails, wait until your sweet companion falls asleep and click away. They’re at their cutest when they’re resting anyway.

Remember to keep your pet safe and comfortable. Don’t let your pet become overheated or over-anxious. A stressed pet won’t take a good photo. Defer to your pet’s temperament, toss out the costumes, and accept the blurred selfie.
