You’re probably happy to have a day off , but have you ever wondered what presidents do outdoors on their days off? Some of these answers might surprise you:
- It’s no secret that President Trump goes gaga for golf, but he’s hardly alone there. Bill Clinton loved to hit the links too, usually with his trademark cigar.
- Barack Obama played his share of golf, but his true passion in the White House was playing hoops.
- Richard Nixon probably spent his days off tossing around the pigskin. He even played football in college, number 12. But he probably wasn’t as good as Gerald Ford, who was a star for Michigan Wolverines.
- There’s no question George W. Bush’s game is baseball; he used to own the Texas Rangers. And George Bush Sr. was a ballplayer at Yale. As team captain, he got to meet Babe Ruth.
- Harry S. Truman was a bowler, and the very first president to use the White House bowling alley.
- As for Jimmy Carter, it’s no secret that the Secret Service had to accompany him any time he went out on a fun run.
- And of course, if you were looking for JFK, there’s a decent chance you might have found him with Jackie, out on his sailboat.

Meatloaf is an American favorite, right up there with Mom's freshly baked apple pie. And while we know that everyone has a favorite way they like to make their meatloaf, we think our Better-than-Ever Meatloaf is sure worth a try.
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 1/2 cups fresh bread crumbs
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup water
- 2/3 cup ketchup, divided
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Preheat oven to 350º. Coat a large baking pan with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except 1/3 cup ketchup; mix well.
- Place mixture into prepared baking pan and shape into a loaf. Spread remaining 1/3 cup ketchup over top.
- Bake 1 hour or until done.
- If you want to cook this in the microwave, simply combine the ingredients as above, then place the mixture in a 2-quart oblong microwaveable baking dish and shape into a loaf. Microwave, uncovered, on High (full power), turning the dish occasionally, for 25 minutes or until done. Remove from the baking dish and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes before serving.
- Want to try a lighter version of this meatloaf recipe? You can use very lean ground turkey or chicken instead of ground beef!

National Daylight Appreciation Day each year on June 21st recognizes the summer solstice (the longest day of daylight in the northern hemisphere) and encourages people to celebrate the many benefits of the sun.
The day also offers an opportunity to learn more about the importance of daylighting. Daylighting is using skylights, windows, and other architectural openings to naturally light interior spaces. Doing so helps not only to reduce energy consumption but may also have health benefits.
Some areas of daylighting are designed with automatic dimming systems when natural light is present. These designs reduce the amount of artificial light required. The process is known as daylight harvesting.
Daylight has positive psychological effects, too. It can boost your mental health and helps lower depression, as well as helping to increase energy levels. The Vitamin D we naturally get from the sun also has many health benefits for us.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Enjoy the summer solstice, enjoy the sunshine. And most importantly, let the sunshine into your home! With the longest day of the year before us, open the windows and bask in the light. Let it flood your home with light and brighten your day.
