Yesterday started off raining but not for long....
Then the clouds got fluffy and some blue sky and wild turkeys were sitting in the shade....

Interesting about Milton Hershey and USS Amerika....
The man behind America’s most iconic chocolate bar, Milton Hershey, bought a VIP ticket for the Titanic but ended up not boarding the ship as planned. The founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company had spent the winter in France and planned to sail home on the Titanic. The Hershey Company Archives has in its collection a $300 check Hershey wrote to the White Star Line as deposit toward his stateroom. Fortunately for Hershey, business back home apparently intervened, and he instead caught a ship that was sailing earlier, the German liner Amerika.

USS America (ID-3006) was a troop transport for the United States Navy during World War I. She was launched in 1905 as SS Amerika by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the Hamburg America Line of Germany. As a passenger liner, she sailed primarily between Hamburg and New York. On 14 April 1912, Amerika transmitted a wireless message about icebergs near the same area where RMS Titanic struck one and sank less than three hours later. At the outset of the war, Amerika was docked at Boston; rather than risk seizure by the British Royal Navy, she remained in port for the next three years.
Hours before the American entry into World War I, Amerika was seized and placed under control of the United States Shipping Board (USSB). Later transferred to the U.S. Navy for use as a troop transport, she was initially commissioned as USS Amerika with Naval Registry Identification Number 3006 (ID-3006), but her name was soon Anglicized to America. As America she transported almost 40,000 troops to France. She sank at her mooring in New York in 1918, but was soon raised and reconditioned. After the Armistice, America transported over 51,000 troops back home from Europe. In 1919, she was handed over to the War Department for use by the United States Army as USAT America, under whose control she remained until 1920.
My dad joined the US Navy and sailed to France on the USS Amerika during WWI. He was a young kid and just 17 years old, lied about his age. Born in 1901.

From Mr. Food.... Cheesy Beer Dip
Creamy, dreamy and ready in no-time. If that sounds like something you’d like to serve at your next gathering, then print out this recipe and keep it in a safe place. You see, we start out with 4 cheeses and take them over the top by adding a splash of beer. Then, we suggest you serve these with toasted refrigerated English muffins as the perfect dippers.
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup beer
- 3 scallions, sliced
- In a large skillet over medium heat, combine cream cheese, sour cream, Swiss, cheddar, and mozzarella cheeses. Stir in the mustard, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, beer, and scallions.
- Heat for 6 to 8 minutes or until cheeses are melted and dip is heated through, stirring occasionally. Serve with toasted English muffin pieces.
Test Kitchen Tip: This dip can also be heated in a cast iron skillet on the grill or in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Serve with your favorite veggies and pretzels in addition to the English muffin pieces.

On June 15th each year, National Smile Power Day shares one powerful expression.
From the good morning greeting and the first “How may I help you?” present yourself with a smile. No matter where you are employed, job seeking, retired, or looking for new horizons starting the day with a smile is certainly more empowering than a pout or grump. Starting with a smile first is easier than trying to get there later in the day.
When you smile at someone, you are telling them that they are valued and worth the smile that you just gave them. Smiles are morale boosters and confidence builders.
Research has proven that smiling really does increase attractiveness and likability between humans. Smiling creates greater trust and increased interpersonal cooperation. Smiling at someone can help them to relax and relieve their stress while at the same time, it will make you feel right. Even if you do not feel like it, smiling will lift your mood and can make you a happier person.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Challenge yourself to smile more often today. Use a smile to disarm a tense situation, or simply smile during your daily tasks. Are you having trouble smiling? Try these tips to help you smile more:
- Think of a few happy moments that automatically generate a smile for you. You know, those moments where you belly laughed until your stomach hurts or a time when you were so pleased with yourself your face hurt from smiling. Keep those memories handy and use them to help you smile more often.
- Save a couple of short jokes that are just so silly you can’t help but smile. Tell them to others, too. The best ones are simple children’s jokes or riddles that play on words.
- Learn Spoonerisms. This fun way of swapping letters in two words in a phrase to make new words make people stop and think. And then they smile and so will you! An example of a Spoonerism is instead of ordering peas and carrots at a restaurant you say, “I’ll have the keys and parrots.”
- Make a list of the things you’re grateful for. Which ones make you smile? Keep the list handy and refer to it often. Add to it and feel your smiles add up.
