Weather ~ Picture of the Day ~ Women on Postage Stamps ~Apple Pie Dump Cake ~ National Pet Day ~ Bruiser/Dude/Dash

Good 27º clear frozen morning.

Yesterday the forecast was for "mostly sunny"..... we started off with light clouds and then they got heavy!

Dude and I took a ride to get some gasoline for the riding lawnmower and we got 12-15 drops of rain on the windshield.

Later the clouds all left and we topped at 66º.

Picture of the Day.... bookstore in China ... wow!

Interesting about women on postage stamps...

The vast majority of U.S. postage stamps feature men, but in December of 1902 Martha Washington became the first American woman to receive that status. The 8-cent stamp with her image honored her as the nation’s original First Lady, because she supported her husband’s activities throughout the Revolutionary War as well as during his presidency. Her warm hospitality also helped humanize the couple as “regular people”, not royalty.

However, although she was the first American woman to appear on US postage stamps, Martha was not the first female. That honor belongs to the Spanish Queen Isabella, who funded Christopher Columbus’s voyage. Isabella appeared on not one, but three, U.S. stamps in January of 1893.

Pocahontas (a Native American woman and chief’s daughter best known for her association with Captain John Smith of the Jamestown Colony in Virginia) was the second American woman to appear on U.S. postage; her 5-cent stamp was issued in April of 1907.

Susan B. Anthony was a social reformer and women’s rights activist who played a pivotal role in the women’s suffrage movement. At age 17 she became the New York state agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society. Her 3-cent stamp came out in August of 1936, recognizing her efforts.

The 8-cent Amelia Earhart stamp was issued in July of 1963. Amelia was an American aviation pioneer and the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, so it is fitting that the stamp honoring her was an airmail stamp.

All I know. Nuff said. Have a good Sunday. Ciao.

April 11 is National Pet Day.  While loving our pets is something we do every day, National Pet Day encourages us to pay special attention to pets who may not get that extra attention.  Helping out orphaned pet companions will improve their health and enhance their opportunities for adoption.
Sometimes their human companions aren’t well.  Making sure their forever furry friends are receiving the best of care will help relieve stress and worry.
National Pet Day is an excellent time to do a few checks for your pets.
  • Go through your forever family member’s toys. Throw away any items that are no longer safe.
  • Maintain your pet-friendly home. Keep cords and toxins secure from your four-legged friends. This includes phone chargers.
  • Verify when vaccinations are due and schedule an appointment to update if they are due.
  • Check collars to ensure tags are secure and numbers are current. We sometimes forget to update this information when we move or change numbers.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Take supplies to those pets in shelters.  Help a friend with pets who is recovering from an illness.  Adopt a pet.
