Pictures of the Day... Lombard Street in San Francisco

Lombard Street is an east–west street in San Francisco, California that is famous for a steep, one-block section with eight hairpin turns. Stretching from The Presidio east to The Embarcadero (with a gap on Telegraph Hill), most of the street's western segment is a major thoroughfare designated as part of U.S. Route 101. The famous one-block section, claimed to be "the crookedest street in the world", is located along the eastern segment in the Russian Hill neighborhood. It is a major tourist attraction, receiving around two million visitors per year and up to 17,000 per day on busy summer weekends, as of 2015.

Our recipe for Irish Potatoes is a twist on an old favorite called Irish Champ. Instead of combining mashed potatoes with scallions, we combined these with shredded cabbage, making it the perfect side dish to go along with your corned beef ... or any other meat dish.

  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
  • 1 small head cabbage, shredded (about 8 cups)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups warm mashed potatoes

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add cabbage, water, onion powder, salt, and pepper; cover and cook 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  2. Uncover and cook 5 more minutes, or until cabbage is wilted, stirring frequently. Add potatoes and mix just until combined; serve.

All I know. Nuff said. Have a good Saturday. Ciao.

Spring begins on the March or vernal equinox, which is when the amount of sunshine is approximately 12 hours long. The amount of sunlight will incrementally increase until the first day of Summer.

The vernal equinox marks the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator. This is the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator, from south to north. The vernal equinox happens on March 19, 20, or 21 every year in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, this same event marks the beginning of fall.  Meteorologists mark the spring from March 1 through May 31st.

In 2020, spring arrived a little earlier due to it being a leap year. On Leap Day, there’s a short math lesson regarding the Gregorian calendar. To keep our calendar following the seasons so that spring happens when flowers grow and winter arrives when snow falls, an additional day was figured into years divisible by the number four. This caused the 2020 spring to occur earlier than any living human being alive had ever seen. Before 2020, the earliest spring on record took place in 1896.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Get ready for longer days and increased sunshine. Tune-up the lawnmower.  More sunshine means the grass will be growing.

SPRING BEGINS HISTORY

Human beings have been following the sun and creating a calendar based on seasons since the beginning of time.

That potato and cabbage recipe is also called Colcannon.  I love it that way but John, not so much.

My friend (whom you may have seen on Fox News as almost a regular) is the "R" Committeewoman and attorney, Harmeet Dhillon. She lives on Lombard Street in SF.  She must have a driveway in the back of her house.  She said the motorcycles running down that street drives them bonkers with the noise.

Happy Spring!
