Interesting about first drunk driving arrest....

On September 10, 1897, a 25-year-old London taxi driver named George Smith becomes the first person ever arrested for drunk driving after driving his cab into a building. On Saturday 11 September 1897, the London newspaper “The Morning Post” reported that at about 00:45 on Friday 10 September 1897, Smith’s vehicle ‘swerved from one side of the road to the other, and ran across the footway into 165 New Bond Street’.

Smith admitted that he’d had ‘two or three glasses of beer’ and apologized, stating that ‘it is the first time I have been charged with being drunk in charge of a cab’. In fact, it was the first time anyone had been charged with such an offence. Smith later pleaded guilty and was fined 25 shillings.

In the U.S.A., the first laws against operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol went into effect in New York in 1910. Despite the invention of the breathalyser in 1953, it was not until the late 1970s and early 1980s that public awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving increased and lawmakers and police officers began to get tougher on offenders.

The drink-driving limit for drivers varies from place to place. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood ( 80 Milligrams is equivalent to 0.0028219169559664 Ounces.) , whereas in Scotland it is 50 mg as it is in most of Europe. Russia’s limit is 18 mg while the U.S. and Canada sit at 80 mg with the Cayman Islands setting the limit at 100 mg.

My friends Linda and Andy down in Woodland California had horrible winds which destroyed some of their fences and their power was off for a day and a half. It just came back on yesterday morning, but they still don't have TV or internet.

All I know. Nuff said. Enjoy your TGIF. Ciao.

On January 29th, grab the queso or salsa and celebrate National Corn Chip Day. Recognized each year across the country, the day encourages corn chip lovers to whip up their favorite dips and toppings.
The corn chip or friotes are not to be confused with the tortilla chip. Both are made from cornmeal which is baked or fried in oil.
Differing steps for processing the corn separate the tortilla from the corn chip. The corn for a tortilla chip is soaked in a lime-water solution that breaks down the hulls. This process creates a crisper, milder chip. A corn chip is sturdier with a stronger corn flavor. Both were popular snacks originating in Mexico.
There are two men credited with patenting and marketing the corn chip in the United States. First, Isador J. Filler often ate a tostada (a hard corn tortilla with toppings) while traveling in San Antonio, Texas as a salesman. He struck on the idea of making them in rectangles and marketing them as a chip. In 1932 he patented his concept.
Around the same time, Elmer Doolin was also traveling in San Antonio and was enjoying friotes. According to the story, he paid $100 for the recipe. Experimenting in his home until he created the ideal chip, Doolin then started selling them from the back of his Model T Ford. When he began mass-producing them under the name of Frito Corn Chips, they were a hit.
In 1945, Doolin came to an agreement with Herman Lay (of potato chip fame) to distribute Doolin’s Fritos across the country. The two companies merged in 1959 after Doolin’s death.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Grab your favorite corn chips. Add some dips or topping.

NATIONAL CORN CHIP DAY HISTORY

National Corn Chip Day has been observed since at least 2002. However, we’ve not been able to identify the organizer of the celebration.

GOOD morning! This is cornbread weather. Thanks for the suggestion on how I might use up some of the bacon bits I the freezer! r

Katherine Ross may have been busy on her way to husband #5- but look who she ended up with... JACKPOT!

The Sellecks are indeed a nice family. I've had the opportunity to not just have enjoyed some interaction- I have observed how they treat "help". It is with kindness and generosity.

I haven't heard of how the storm hit our local communities- but it was fierce through the night.

I have corn tortillas and oil- you are my excuse to binge a bit! '

Have a GREAT day.

I posted on FB a photo of bowls filled with my homemade chili. I said I would have loved to have made cornbread to go with it but John doesn't like it. I am wondering if he would like it with bacon??? hmmmmm Right now for my brunch I am having two baked potatoes filled with the chili, cheese and chopped onion. OMG sooo good! :) OINK!

It was like a hurricane hit our property up on our hill! Two heavy pots got blown off tables and smashed. Two giant cactus plants blown over and John says one weighed about 100 pounds. It took two men to right them. Big BBQ blown all the way around, cushions blown every where. It was scary.
