Weather ~ Fall ~ Miller High Life Beer ~ "Grandma's Best Casserole" ~ John Berokoff ~ American Business Women's Day

Good First Day of Fall dark cloudy 53º morning.

Yesterday, again, we started clear, blue sky, and sunny. Then it got windy and smoke moved in and clouds.

We topped at 83º.

In 2020, the autumnal equinox—also called the September equinox or fall equinox—arrives on Tuesday, September 22. Fall begins in the Northern Hemisphere and spring begins in the Southern Hemisphere.

The word “equinox” comes from Latin aequus, meaning “equal,” and nox, “night.” On the equinox, day and night are roughly equal in length. (See more about this below.)

During the equinox, the Sun crosses what we call the “celestial equator”—an imaginary extension of Earth’s equator line into space. The equinox occurs precisely when the Sun’s center passes through this line. When the Sun crosses the equator from north to south, this marks the autumnal equinox; when it crosses from south to north, this marks the vernal equinox.

After the autumnal equinox, the Sun begins to rise later and nightfall comes sooner. This ends with the December solstice, when days start to grow longer and nights shorter.

Note that fall foliage isn’t due to current weather conditions. This is a common misconception. Leaves change color because of the amount of daylight and photosynthesis.

And don’t forget about the end of Daylight Saving Time, when we “fall” back, setting our clocks back one hour and regaining an hour of precious sleep! ... November 1. 2020.

Interesting about Miller High Life beer.....

In the past, Miller High Life was called the “Champagne of Bottled Beer”. In fact, in the early 1900’s, it was packaged in champagne bottles – gold wrapping, ribbon, cork, and all. The aroma and flavors incorporated into the beer, even the more calorie-friendly Miller Lite option, was noted to be second to none and was enjoyed during a night out, or at home.

Regarding the beer, it has been a favorite among bartenders, brewers, and beer lovers in general. Miller High Life was launched as Miller Brewing Company’s flagship beer in 1903. Its crisp, easy-drinking flavor has been the epitome of the American lager for decades and decades. True to its original recipe, it is still brewed with a proprietary blend of malted barley, Galena hops from the Pacific Northwest, and Miller yeast.

In the early 1900s, most Americans enjoyed their beer in a saloon or taken home in a bucket. As a market developed for “bottle beer”, Miller Brewers crafted a crisp, refreshing, effervescent flagship beer. Within three years, the new beer earned the nickname “The Champagne of Bottle Beer".

From Mr. Food

One of our Test Kitchen team members always raves about how much she loved going to her grandmother's house for Sunday dinner. One of her favorite side dishes was always a creamy veggie and pasta casserole. So, inspired by this memory-making dish, we came up with this recipe for Grandma’s Best Casserole.

  • 1 pound (16-ounce) jar light spaghetti sauce
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, cut into 1/2-inch chunks
  • 1 (8-ounce) package fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 2 (10-3/4-ounce) cans condensed cheese soup
  • 8 ounces bacon, cooked and crumbled

  1. Preheat oven to 350º.  Coat a 9- x 13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.
  2. Cook spaghetti according to package directions; drain, return to pot, and set aside.
  3. Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter; sauté onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms 6 to 7 minutes, or until tender. Add  vegetable mixture and remaining ingredients to spaghetti; mix well.
  4. Place mixture in prepared casserole dish, cover, and cook 25 to 30 minutes, or until heated through.
