Weather ~ Excitement ~ Picture of the Day ~ Blood Types ~ Roasted Asparagus and Mushroom Carbonara ~ National Banana Split Day

Good 52º clear sky morning.
Yesterday we warmed to 100º and predictions for higher for the next few days.

Yesterday was exciting... fill water tubs for the critters outside, filled the bird feeders, kill weeds, vacuumed. Just over the top exciting and fun day! Hope your day was as fun.

Picture of the Day....  Ahhh.... no wonder!

Interesting about blood types...
Humans have 4 basic Blood Types: A, B, AB & O. For each type, there is a + (positive) & a - (negative). 45% of the population is either O+ or O-. 40% of the population is either A+ or A-. 10% is either B+ or B- and 5% is either AB+ or AB-. Type O- is called the Universal donor blood type and a person with type AB+ can receive Red blood cells as a Universal Recipient.

O- blood cells are called “universal” meaning they can be transfused to almost any patient in need, and only 6.6% of the population has O- blood. In the event of an emergency, trauma patients and accident victims are given a fighting chance at life due to O Negative blood transfusion. You may hear that “O- blood is the type they carry on the medical helicopters”. This is often the case when there is no time to ask questions.
Additionally, O- red blood cells are safest for newborn infants with under-developed immune systems. Your commitment to regular and frequent donations is especially important to maintain sufficient supplies for our community. And, local patients are grateful for your “gift of life”. It is also important to remember that while donors of all blood types can receive O- blood, those with O- blood can generally only receive O- blood. In extreme emergencies when O- is in short supply, sometimes O+ can be substituted. 1 in 15 people have O- blood (approximately 6.6% of the population).

(....if only she could keep her open palms in her pockets instead of waving them all over and in front of her face when she's talking and brushing back her hair! But, I guess it's impossible since she's Italian, but also she NEVER stops talking. Even interrupting special guest (all guests!) Tom Selleck! She cooks great, but wish she'd shut up and keep her hands DOWN! Also, she needs to quit saying (in lyrical style) "I know."

National Banana Split Day recognizes the sweet ice cream treat served with a banana, whipped cream, and various toppings. Get yours on August 25th!

How to Make a Banana Split:
Originally served in drug stores, soda fountains and ice cream parlors, the banana split is traditionally served in a long dish called a boat. To make a banana split, cut the banana lengthwise and place it in the dish. Then add scoops of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream between the slices of banana. Each scoop gets a topping; add crushed pineapple to the strawberry, drizzle chocolate syrup over the vanilla, and add strawberry topping to the chocolate. Next, sprinkle with crushed nuts. Finally, garnish with whipped cream and maraschino cherries.
The Inventor
A 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist at Tassel’s Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania created the first banana split in 1904.  David Evans Strickler enjoyed inventing sundaes at the store’s soda fountain. For only 10 cents, Strickler sold his first “banana-based triple ice cream sundae,” double the cost of all the other sundaes.

NATIONAL BANANA SPLIT DAY HISTORY

We were unable to find the creator of National Banana Split Day. However, in David Strickler’s hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, they proudly celebrate his creation with a festival annually in August. In 2013, they placed an official marker at the site of the pharmacy where Strickler first made his famous banana split. Then, the United States Post Office honored the banana split and the town of Latrobe in 2016 with a 47-cent “forever stamp” depicting the banana split.  It was one of five stamps in the “Soda Fountain Favorites” series.  For a time, Latrobe residents could receive a cancellation mark memorializing their claim to fame.

GOOD morning. Love pasta carbonara of any kind.Because I like to fool around with COOKING, my suggestion to complete the gastronomic trip to heaven would be to stir in a handful each of sliced black olives and pine nuts.

Tim Burton- I would give most of my limbs to have the creativity which bounds his pinkie.

In some other dimension, Rachel Ray performs as a conductor... perhaps for the "I know it" Orchestra.

Probably no amount of parenting skills would have changed who Milly Cyrus decided to be when she hit this age. I refuse to say grew up, because it is unlikely that she can un-wedge herself from the damage of early fame and fortune. Perhaps this is cynical: I do hope to be wrong. Nothing is a happier story than a prodigal child who changes ways.
