Interesting about White House fire...
On August 24,1814, during the War of 1812, British troops entered Washington, D.C. and set fire to many public buildings including the White House, in revenge for the American burning of York (now Toronto) in 1813.
President Madison had fled to safety two days previously but his wife, Dolley, remained behind to gather important state papers. She managed to save what turned out to be a copy of a portrait of George Washington and a copy of the Declaration of Independence before fleeing and meeting her husband in Brookeville, Maryland.
A tornado and accompanying rain doused the flames and saved many of the public buildings from being completely ruined. The British retreated to their ships and departed after the twenty-six hour occupation of the capital.
After the fire, James Hoban, the original architect, was commissioned to lead the rebuilding of the White House. Only the exterior walls remained, and they had to be torn down and mostly reconstructed because of weakening from the fire and subsequent exposure to the elements, except for portions of the south wall.
In 1817, the building was completed and President James Monroe moved in.
At various times in history, the White House has been known as the “President’s Palace,” the “President’s House,” and the “Executive Mansion.”
President Theodore Roosevelt officially gave the White House its current name in 1901.

When working for UPS I delivered a package to his Mulholland Drive home. He drove out just as I arrived and waved to me. This was about 1980. His butler and one of his twin sons, Gunnar or Matthew (about 13 at the time)
answered the door. He also had about 15 dogs in his yard, all different, all friendly!
After 5pm Tractor Dave showed up and brush hogged until dark...
All I know. Nuff said. Happy Hump Day. Ciao.

Each year on May 8, millions of people across the country celebrate National Have a Coke Day. Coca-Cola, often referred to as Coke, is a carbonated soft drink that is produced by The Coca-Cola Company. As of 2013, Coke products can be found in over 200 countries around the world as consumers down more than 1.8 million company beverage servings each day.
HISTORY
In the late 19th century, John Pemberton invented Coca-Cola, at Pemberton’s Eagle Drug and Chemical House in Columbus, Georgia, intending it as a patent medicine. It was then bought out by businessman Asa Griggs Candler. Candler’s marketing tactics led Coke to its dominance of the world soft-drink market throughout the 20th century.
1891 – The first bottling of Coco-Cola occurred at the Biedenharn Candy Company in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
1894 – The first outdoor wall advertisement that promoted the Coca-Cola drink was painted in Cartersville, Georgia
1914 – The longest running commercial Coca-Cola soda fountain anywhere was Atlanta’s Fleeman’s Pharmacy. The pharmacy closed its doors in 1995 after 81 years.
1944 – July 12, the one-billionth gallon of Coca-Cola syrup was manufactured by the Coca-Cola Company.
1955 – Cans of Coke first appeared.
***I cannot even remember when the last time was I had a Coke!

I think I have told you before but when John would transport Coke or Pepsi syrup with his big rig he was under Hazmat. Yup, it's that lethal in raw form!
I have copied that cherry desert recipe. May make that one for my bunco. :)
No I cannot believe that the Canadians would allow that killer to walk free! He should have gotten the death penalty! :(
Interesting about the White House. I am puzzled by the fact that Munroe left for safety and wife Dolly stayed behind to collect valuables! What kind of husband/man would do that???

Lots of crazy things, T. ox
That was interesting about the revenge angle of the British burning of the White House. That detail wasn't in the history books I was raised on. Glad US/ British relationship is better now.
Dolly Madison is one of our more interesting first ladies. Her husband and the nation got a polished gem in that one. I am not sure that the cariacture of him running to safety and leaving his young wife behind fully describes actual events.
Canada does not have a death penalty. How difficult it must be for the families of the victims of Joseph Lortie to have him walk free. Schizophrenic or not, their family members deserved to live.
