Clouds ~ Rain ~ Dr. Steinsiek ~ Picture of the Day ~ Lemurs ~ Pumpkin Cookies ~ Jimmy Duran ~ Rico Suavé ~ National Red Cross Founder's Day

Good 46º raining morning.

Sunny with fluffy clouds yesterday............

and we had wind and stayed in the 60ºs.

Yesterday was a trip into Medford again for my doctor yearly checkup, at Asante Black Oak office. My doctor, Rachael Orozco, left Asante and is now working at the Veteran's Administration in White City. They are so lucky to have her! So, she recommended Dr. Jill Steinsiek for me. I really like her. Very very nice. An Arkansas girl!! She's been here in Oregon since 2002. Highly recommended.

Interesting.....
Scientific evidence suggests that Madagascar originated from a severe earthquake that separated it from Africa about 200 million years ago. This separation from continental mainland caused the island to drift 250 miles northeast and settled for about 35-45 million years. The evolutionary history of lemurs occurred in isolation from other primates, on the island of Madagascar, for at least 40 million years.
Lemurs are primates belonging to the suborder Strepsirrhini, which branched off from other primates less than 63 million years ago. They share some traits with the most basal primates, and thus are often confused as being ancestral to modern monkeys, apes, and humans. Instead, they merely resemble ancestral primates.

Lemurs are thought to have evolved during the Eocene or earlier, sharing a closest common ancestor with lorises, pottos, and galagos (lorisoids). Fossils from Africa and some tests of nuclear DNA suggest that lemurs made their way to Madagascar between 40 and 52 mya. Other mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence comparisons offer an alternative date range of 62 to 65 mya. An ancestral lemur population is thought to have inadvertently rafted to the island on a floating mat of vegetation, although hypotheses for land bridges and island hopping have also been proposed. The timing and number of hypothesized colonizations has traditionally hinged on the phylogenetic affinities of the aye-aye, the most basal member of the lemur clade.

1957 – Judge Reinhold, American actor
He never impressed me, maybe because he always seemed to play a gawky dorky dumbo. Can't imagine that is too far from his real personality! Which is pretty much how most actors are... their real personality comes through.

On May 21, National American Red Cross Founder’s Day marks the anniversary of the American Red Cross, which was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, the first president of the organization.  Barton led the organization for the next twenty-three years.
The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization which provides assistance inside the United States and is the designated affiliate of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
In addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross which is headquartered in Washington D.C. and governed by volunteers now offers services in five other areas:
  • Community services to help the needy
  • Communications services and comfort for military members and their families
  • The collection, processing and distribution of blood and blood products
  • Educational programs on preparedness, health and safety
  • International relief and development programs
Clara Barton (1821 – 1912) founded the American chapter of the Red Cross following her travel to Europe, which began in 1869.  While in Europe, Barton volunteered her time working with the International Red Cross during the Franco-Prussian War.  Upon returning to the United States, she was determined to bring the Red Cross to America.  In 1881, the American Red Cross was started.

Cool photo they put on TV. Everybody in town has to know your name by now. :)

Congrats on you getting an Arkansas gal for a doctor. I am not surprised that she is very very nice. We Arkansas girls are that way! :) Wish I had one of those. Mine is a Chinese gal but very nice too.

I loved Harold Robbins's books. Carpetbaggers was a real scandalous book back then. :) I had to hide it from my mom and read it. :)
