Today, Ash Wednesday, signals the beginning of Lenten season for Christians. It takes place 46 days before Easter and the day after Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday. Though named for its former religious significance, it is chiefly marked by feasting and celebration, which traditionally preceded the observance of the Lenten fast. Compare with Mardi Gras).

Ash Wednesday services focus on the death and repentance the ashes represent. In many churches, the ashes are made from the palms branches that are burned from the previous Palm Sunday service. 

Following a service or mass, the pastor or priest will invite their congregation to receive the ashes on their forehead. A cross pattern or other similar mark is made.

This solemn day begins a time of meditation, reflection, self-examination, study, and contemplation when Christians consider their own mortality and sinfulness in preparation for Easter.

This is weird... I put in an order to Amazon. I put an "add on" item of some cat treats and was told the order would be divided into two orders. I got the first half and then yesterday the other half came. What was weird it that it was shipped from Wal-Mart! Are Wal-Mart and Amazon combining ???? So I did some research and found this...

Interesting about Worcestershire Sauce...

 

 

Worcestershire sauce is a fermented liquid condiment of complex mixture originally created in England by the Worcester chemists John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins, who went on to form the company Lea & Perrins. Worcestershire sauce legally has been considered a generic term since 1876 when The High Court of the United Kingdom ruled that Lea and Perrins do not own the trademark to "Worcestershire."

The US version is packaged differently from the British version, coming in a dark bottle with a beige label and wrapped in paper. Lea & Perrins USA claims this practice is a vestige of shipping practices from the 19th century, when the product was imported from England, as a measure of protection for the bottles. The producer also claims that its Worcestershire sauce is the oldest commercially bottled condiment in the US.

Worcestershire sauce is frequently used to enhance food and drink recipes, included in traditional Welsh rarebit, Caesar salad, Oysters Kirkpatrick, and deviled eggs. As both background flavor and a source of umami, the savoury so-called "fifth flavor", it is also added to dishes which historically did not contain it, such as chili con carne and beef stew. It is also used directly as a condiment on steaks, hamburgers, and other finished dishes. The sauce is also used to flavor cocktails such as the Bloody Mary and Caesar.

Minestrone Soup

Prep Time:15 minutes Cook Time:25 minutesTotal Time:40 minutes Servings: 8

A light tasty and healthy vegetable soup that is easy to make and packed with flavor!

• 2 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 cup onions, diced
• 1 cup carrots, diced
• 1 cup celery, diced
• 4 cloves garlic, chopped
• 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
• 1/2 teaspoon ground fennel seeds
• 3 cups vegetable broth (or chicken broth)
• 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
• 1 (15 oz) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
• 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
• 8 ounces pasta (gluten-free for gluten-free)
• 1 medium zucchini, cut into bite sized pieces
• 1/2 pound green beans, cut into bite sized pieces
• 5 ounces baby spinach, coarsely chopped
• salt and pepper to taste
• 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
• 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated (optional)

 

 

1. Heat the oil in a large sauce pan over medium-high heat, add the onions, celery and carrot and cook until tender, about 5-7 minutes.
2. Add the garlic, red pepper flakes, and fennel and cook until fragrant, about a minute.
3. Add the broth, tomatoes, Italian seasoning, and pasta, bring to a boil, reduce the beat and simmer until the pasta is almost cooked, about 5 minutes.
4. Add the zucchini, green beans and spinach and cook until tender, about 2 minutes.
5. Mix in the parsley and Parmesan and enjoy!

Option: Use your favorite vegetables!
Option: Throw a Parmesan rind into simmer with the soup for extra flavor!
Option: Add a few tablespoon of tomato paste for a richer tomato flavor.

Be ready to observe by having your glass of milk handy as it is National Oreo Cookie Day.  This day is recognized across the nation each year on March 6th.

The Oreo sandwich cookie is made up of two chocolate disks containing a sweet cream filling and is loved by millions.  Since it’s introduction, the Oreo cookie has become the best-selling cookie in the United States.

The National Biscuit Company (today known as Nabisco) first developed and produced the “Oreo Biscuit” in 1912 at its Chelsea factory in New York City. Today, the block on which the factory was located is known as “Oreo Way”.

• The name “Oreo” was first trademarked on March 14, 1912.
• The first Oreo cookies in the United States sold for 25 cents a pound in clear glass topped novelty cans.
• In 1912, the Oreo Biscuit was renamed to “Oreo Sandwich”.
• In 1948, the Oreo Sandwich was renamed to “Oreo Creme Sandwich”.
• William A. Turnier developed the modern-day Oreo design in 1952 to include the Nabisco logo.
