Good 32º snowy morning.

It wasn't "supposed" to snow until Saturday but we got some early. Looks like only here in Rogue River.... 

I had to go out first thing and clean the snow off the satellite dishes...

The on and off ramps for RR on I-5.....

I checked the ODOT cams for Medford, Central Point, and Grants Pass, but none of them showed snow. Maybe in Grants Pass at the higher elevations.

Yesterday the rain was still coming down, but the sun peeked through the clouds and warmed up the last of the snow and it steamed! By then it was 45º. The sun came and went.

While the sun was out, Dude was happy!

And way down in the lower pasture the toms were standing in the rain, "cleaning" themselves and fluffing out their feathers....

A male turkey is often called a "tom" turkey, because tom is used to refer to the male of many animal species. Calling a male animal a "tom" is most often used when referring to turkeys and cats. It is rumored that Benjamin Franklin was the one who began to call male turkeys "toms.".

About noon the winds kicked up really wild and the wind scared the poop out of Dude and Bruiser! Me too!!! I had to hook the screen doors closed as they were blowing open! 

So....... I sent this picture to KOBI and guess what......... they put it on the news!!!

Up on the hill a tree on my neighbor's property blew down!

A retired deputy's intuition helped officers arrest a suspected gunman accused of shooting a 10-year-old boy in the head on the 15 Freeway in Phelan.

PHELAN, Calif. (KABC) --

A suspected gunman has been arrested for allegedly shooting a 10-year-old boy in the head on the 15 Freeway in Phelan.

The shooting occurred last Thursday shortly after 9 p.m. on the northbound 15 at Cleghorn Fire Road. The boy was riding in his family's vehicle when he was shot.

The California Highway Patrol announced the arrest of 48-year-old Jose Chavez during a Wednesday morning press conference. CHP said media coverage and a retired deputy's hunch led to Chavez's arrest.

On the night of the shooting, Chavez was caught trespassing on the property of a retired San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy in the High Desert.

Chavez was arrested, and a search of his nearby parked car turned up a firearm. He was booked on suspicion of trespassing and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The next day, that retired deputy saw media reports of the shooting and called CHP and told officers about the suspect who had trespassed on her property the night of the shooting.

CHP investigators spoke with Chavez, who was in custody. They also served a search warrant at his Phelan home, where they found several more weapons.

Chavez was identified as the suspect in the shooting and he is facing a charge of attempted murder. CHP Chief Bill Dance said without the retired deputy, the case would not have been solved as quickly.

"It would have been very easy for this retired deputy not to call in...it was her hunch, her intuition, maybe her 'spidey senses' were tingling, but she called in, and she left that tip, and if it wasn't for her, we would not be here today," Dance said.

The boy was shot near the top of his head. He has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The boy's mother says her son said after going through this whole ordeal, he now wants to be a law enforcement officer in his community when he grows up.

Honey Lemon Chicken

I seem to have been on quite the lemon kick lately! This week it’s a honey lemon chicken which is a dish that I enjoy ordering when eating out at Chinese restaurants. I thought that I would try my hand at making it at home and I wanted to try keeping it on the lighter side. Normally the honey lemon chicken comes fried in a crispy batter but I decided to go with simply sauteing the chicken. I cooked the chicken as the full breast and then sliced it as that is how it normally comes but I was thinking that you could easily cut the chicken into bite sized pieces, add some vegetables and turn this into more of a stir-fry. Next up was the sauce which I kept nice and simple with pretty much just the honey and the lemon. I did add a bunch of ginger for a bit of a kick though. The honey lemon chicken was a snap to make and it turned out really well. Lemon pairs well with honey and works surprisingly well in savoury dishes like this. I served the honey lemon chicken with some steamed broccoli and some brown rice which did an excellent job of soaking up all of the extra sauce.

1 pound chicken breasts

salt and pepper

1 T oil

1 T grated ginger

1 lemon, juice and zest

2 T honey

1/4 cup chicken stock

1. Season chicken with salt and pepper

2. heat the oil in the pan

3. Add the chicken and sauté until golden brown and cooked through... set aside.

4. Add the ginger and saute until fragrant, about one minute

5. Add the lemon juice and zest, honey, stock, and salt and pepper to taste. (note.. do a taste test here to make sure the lemon and honey balance nicely.)

6. Pour the honey lemon sauce over the chicken and serve

Option: serve over cooked pasta or cooked rice.

Observed on February 15th, National Gumdrop Day recognizes a favorite candy of many; the gumdrop!  On National Gumdrop Day, there is no question as to what to do.  Eat gumdrops and eat as many as you want!

Gumdrops are a tasty, colorful, chewy candy that is made with gelatin and then coated with sugar.  They come in a variety of flavors and can either be fruity or spicy.  These little candy treats make terrific embellishments for decorating gingerbread houses and other baked goods.

The classic board game, Candy Land, features both a Gumdrop Pass and a Gumdrop Mountain.

Besides enjoying them by the handful, there are many other ways to use gumdrops:

• In cookies
• Decorate cakes or cupcakes
• In popcorn cake
• For crafts
• For gifts

You can also make gumdrops yourself.  According to many recipes, you would need vegetable oil, sugar, corn syrup, fruit juice, powdered fruit pectin, baking soda and food coloring.

Credit for the modern gumdrop goes to chemist and candy manufacturer Percy S. Truesdell.  According to articles after his death in 1948, Truesdell took the once hard, poorly flavored glob of sugar and turned it into the smooth, chewy delight we enjoy today.  While at the University of Ohio, the chemist altered the consistency of the of the candy by experimenting with the amount of starch used.  He later worked for the Snyder-Chafee Company until 1915.  In 1916, Truesdell founded and incorporated the P.S. Truesdell Candy Manufacturing Company.  At his death, he became known as the Gumdrop King.
