Good 34º cloudy some fog morning. SO nice not to be FROZEN!! 

We did get rain in the night, about 1". 

The fog yesterday............ 

And the geese on my barn roof.....

The ones on the roof were honking at these two down in the pasture....

Yesterday a run to Grants Pass to get my vacuum cleaner fixed. It quit sucking!!! I found a guy who does small appliance repair in his garage. He's retired from his regular job and has been doing this repair for 29 years. Super nice. Norman Coveney. If you have some small appliance that needs fixing, his number is 541-476-3612. He is in Grants Pass by Riverside Park. We had a fun conversation as we have a bit in common. At one time he worked for a short time in law enforcement in So. Cal. He was also a Marine in Viet Nam. He has two cutie pie chihuahua dogs and a cat who he says bites everyone. He didn't bite me, but let me pet him! 

Then the same old same old errands... post office for packages and market for groceries.

Sea story!   This has to be one of the most interesting factoids ever without GPS! 

The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought Captain John DS. Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo's position was LAT 0º 31' N and LONG 179 30' W. The date was 31 December 1899. "Know what this means?" First Mate Payton broke in, "We're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line". Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime. He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ship's position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line! The consequences of this bizarre position were many:

The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer.
The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter.
The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899.
In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900.
This ship was therefore not only in:
Two different days,
Two different months,
Two different years,
Two different seasons
But in two different centuries - all at the same time!

Mushroom Chicken & Wild Rice Soup...........

• 2 tablespoons butter
• 1 pound mushrooms, sliced
• 1 tablespoon butter
• 1 onion, diced
• 2 carrots, diced
• 2 stalks celery, diced
• 2 cloves garlic, chopped
• 1 teaspoon thyme, chopped
• 6 cups chicken broth
• 1 cup wild rice blend
• 1 1/2 cups chicken, cooked and diced or shredded
• 1 cup milk or cream
• 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
• salt and pepper to taste

1. Melt the butter in a pan over medium-high heat, add the mushrooms and onion and cook until the mushrooms have released their liquids and the liquid has evaporated, about 10-15 minutes, before setting aside.
2. Melt the butter in the pan, add the onions, carrots and celery and cook until tender, about 8-10 minutes.
3. Mix in the garlic and thyme and cook until fragrant, about a minute.
4. Add the broth, rice, chicken and mushrooms, bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer until the rice is tender, about 20-30 minutes.
5. Mix in the milk and cheese and cook until the cheese has melted, before seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

On February 20th, pet lovers everywhere observe National Love Your Pet Day.  This holiday is a day set aside to give extra attention to and pamper your pets.  This is a good day to focus on the special relationship that you have with your pets.

Did you know that most households in the United States have at least one pet?  While there are more cats than dogs in the United States, more households have dogs than cats, but not by much. Pets are not limited to the canine and feline categories.  There are quite a few who prefer the companionship of birds, reptiles, fish or rats.  Whoever your pet companion is, we are sure you will enjoy spending a little extra time with them on National Love Your Pet Day and reap the benefits, as well such as stress relief and lower blood pressure.  So on February 20 (and every day) show your appreciation to your pets!
