Full Moon ~ Rain ~ Black Friday ~ Macy's Parade & Tucker's Band ~ Picture of the Day ~ Macy's Parade First Balloon ~ Leftover Turkey Dressing Casserole ~ Ham Dinner ~ National Espresso Day

Happy Day After Thanksgiving!

Good 43º dark pouring rain morning. Since yesterday we have gotten another 3/4" of rain.

Today is "Black Friday". One of those days that you are safer staying in instead of shopping.
It's also a FULL MOON!!!!! Be careful out there!

Yesterday the Macy's Parade was on with my grandson Tucker playing drums in the Grants Pass High School Band. Their band was the second one, after the Ohio State College Band. No close ups of our drummers, but I took some photos off the TV.

You can imagine how everyone was freezing back there. The temperature was 19º with a "real feel" of -5º !!!! YIKES. So many of the band members from all of the schools were flag girls or ... and they were scantily dressed, with short skirts/shorts and shirts with open sleeves!!! I honestly don't know how they survived!

Here is an article by the local newspaper about the band..

Picture of the Day.....
The oldest float in the Macy's Day Parade....

Interesting.... the first Macy's Day Parade balloon....

Felix the Cat was a star of the silent film era and had a comic strip in newspapers around the nation when he made his Thanksgiving Day Parade debut in 1927, the first year the event featured cartoon character balloons. Without a plan to deflate this massive balloon, NYC parade organizers simply let Felix fly off into the sky. Unfortunately, the Felix the Cat balloon got caught in some telephone wires and caught fire. In 2016, after a nearly 90 year hiatus, Felix made a triumphant return to the parade. Mickey Mouse did not join the parade until 1934. Snoopy and Uncle Sam also came along in later years.

Later dinner was my Quarter Honey Baked Ham (3-4 pounds) dinner with some green beans in a sauce with mushrooms, red peppers, and crispy fried onions.

It all arrives frozen. I took the ham and put it in the fridge to thaw. Then cut some slices and let them warm to room temp. The vegetables go from frozen to the oven to heat, they are already cooked. These hams are the BEST!!!!!

According to what traditionally is known as "The First Thanksgiving," the 1621 feast between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag at Plymouth Colony contained waterfowl, venison, ham, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash. There is no definitive proof they ate turkey, and sweet potatoes were not yet grown in North America. The pilgrims didn't use forks; they ate with spoons, knives, and their fingers. Governor Winthrop of Massachusetts introduced the fork 10 years later, but it did not really catch on until the 18th century.

National Espresso Day is observed annually on November 23.
The word espresso (/ɛˈsprɛsoʊ/; Italian pronunciation: [eˈsprɛsso]) in Italian means ‘quick in time’. Before the advent of the espresso machine, espresso was simply a coffee expressly made for the person ordering it and made with recently roasted beans which were freshly ground before brewing and freshly brewed before serving. In the late 1800s, this was common practice in cafés and restaurants.
Today, the freshness has been maintained, but we have come to know espresso as a highly concentrated brew served in smaller quantities or used as a base for other, delicious coffee creations. This modern view of espresso is due to the advent of the espresso machine. In 1901, the first successful espresso machine was invented by Italian inventor Luigi Bezzera. The newer technologies produced a smaller, more concentrated cup more quickly than more traditional coffee brewing methods.
This thicker, more intense brew creates a creamy foam on top called the crema.  The richer flavors and aromas of an espresso create delicious lattes, mochas, cappuccinos, macchiato and many cafe’ creations.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Enjoy a cup of espresso

A happy Thanksgiving weekend to you. I really enjoyed reading about the band (and remembering why I'm not overly nostalgic for standing in line in the freezing cold to march behind what the equestrian units left behind).

Espresso sounds especially nice today. My refrigerator delivery has been moved to a much less convenient day. C'iest la vie.

OH MY GOODNESS!! I cannot even imagine freezing weather like that and those in charge did not see to it that those girls had alternative costumes rather than those skimpy ones. I wasn't able to watch but a few minutes of the parade and I did see some sensibly dressed.

I recorded the entire parade so I will watch it today and see Tucker's band. What great memories for those kids! Of course the memories will be greater for the parents than the kids. i know because my boys just shrug it off when I talk about when they marched in the Rose Parade. :)

Glad you enjoyed you wonderful looking ham dinner!

XO Trisha
