Dash/Dude ~ Picture of the Day ~ Arroyo Seco Parkway/Pasadena Freeway ~ BLT Macaroni Salad ~ Dinner~ Dash ~ National Carbonated Beverage With Caffeine Day

Good 26º clear morning.

Yesterday got sunny and warm.

I posted Dave Clark's birthday yesterday and it was also Mickey Mouse's birthday. Interesting about Dave's father and uncle... they both worked for Disney, drawing caricatures back in the 1930's!!

Dash is Dude's shadow. He follows Dude everywhere! A good thing, when they are outside! Then I don't worry about him squeezing through the fence and going somewhere! While I was working at my desk, took off my slippers, and Dash came and laid down on my feet! Such a love!!! ♥

Picture of the Day....

Interesting about the first freeway...

The Arroyo Seco Parkway, also known as the Pasadena Freeway, is the first freeway in the  United States. It connects Los Angeles with Pasadena alongside the Arroyo Seco seasonal river. It is notable not only for being the first, mostly opened in 1940, but for representing the transitional phase between early parkways and modern freeways. It conformed to modern standards when it was built, but is now regarded as a narrow, outdated roadway.  A 1953 extension brought the south end to the Four Level Interchange in downtown Los Angeles and a connection with the rest of the freeway system.

The road remains largely as it was on opening day, though the plants in its median have given way to a steel guard rail, and most recently to concrete barriers, and it now carries the designation State Route 110, not historic U.S. Route 66. Between 1954 and 2010, it was officially designated the Pasadena Freeway. In 2010, as part of plans to revitalize its scenic value and improve safety, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) restored the original name to the roadway. All the bridges built during parkway construction remain, as do four older bridges that crossed the Arroyo Seco before the 1930s. The Arroyo Seco Parkway is designated a State Scenic HighwayNational Civil Engineering Landmark, and National Scenic Byway. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

I so remember driving my little Porsche on that freeway. It was a very winding road, fun in the Porsche. What was interesting, as opposed to now, there was a stop sign at the end of each on ramp just prior to getting on the freeway. No way to get up to the speed limit on the on ramp and merging with the freeway traffic! Stop and then go!

  • Here's another way to make a macaroni salad.....
  • BLT Macaroni Salad

  • Okay, so you won't find any lettuce in this BLT Macaroni Salad, but we have put in extra-green and flavorful baby spinach. We think it gives this macaroni salad recipe a tasty new twist! Serve it to your gang and see how much they'll love it!
  •
  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, cut in half
  • 1/2 cups coarsely chopped baby spinach

  1. Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and let cool.
  2. In a large bowl, combine mayonnaise, garlic, salt, and pepper. Add pasta and remaining ingredients; mix well, cover, and refrigerate until ready to serve.

***You may need to add a little extra mayo before serving, if it's a bit drier than you like after refrigeration.

Then it was chair, wine, Dash sharing my chair, and TV....

National Carbonated Beverage With Caffeine Day is a unique food holiday observed annually on November 19.
Some people cannot have caffeine due to medical reasons, some choose to avoid caffeine for their own reasons and then there are the millions of people who like their caffeine very much.  The same is true with the carbonation in beverages.  Today’s celebration combines the two of them together.
  • In 1767, Englishman Joseph Priestly suspended a bowl of distilled water above a beer vat at a local brewery in Leeds, England which led to the discovery of a method of infusing water with carbon dioxide to make carbonated water.  Priestly’s invention of carbonated water is the major and the defining component of most soft drinks.
  • Caffeine acts as a central nervous system stimulant, temporarily warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness.  Ninety percent of adults in North America consume caffeine daily.   Some people notice sleep disruption after drinking beverages containing caffeine while others see no disturbance at all.
