Bruiser ~ Donations to Fire Fighters ~ Lunch with Karen at Taqueria La Guacamaya ~ Funny Signs ~ Picture of the Day ~ Whiskey Cake ~ Bob & Marie Vincent ~ National Watermelon Day

Good 50º morning. Clear sky for now. Topped at 97º yesterday.

I keep a cup of water on my desk for Bruiser. He lays down and puts his face in the cup and drinks!

Yesterday I stopped at the pharmacy and market to pick up some items to donate to the fire fighters... Here's the list of items they really could use... and Grants Pass places to drop them off...

also...
Hypoallergenic baby wipes. Large packs/tubs can be broken down into ziplock sandwich baggies to put in pockets. They help to wipe the sweat and dirt from their eyes/faces.

Then I met up with Karen aka Sugar Bear for lunch at Taqueria La Guacamaya...
We had a great lunch. Mine was a pork tamale and a spinach cheese tamale, rice and beans. And a margarita!
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!!!
I only ate half and brought the rest home for dinner. Karen did the same thing and then ordered take for her hubby's dinner!

Some more signs, shared by Sugar Bear.....

Outside a Muffler Shop:
"No appointment necessary. We hear you coming."

In a Veterinarian's waiting room:
"Be back in 5 minutes. Sit! Stay!"

At the Electric Company:
"We would be delighted if you would pay your bill.
You will be delighted if you don't."

In a Restaurant window:
"Don't stand there and be hungry; come on in and get fed up."

In the front yard of a Funeral Home:
"Drive carefully. We'll wait..."

At a Propane Filling Station:
"Thank Heaven for little grills."

In a Chicago Radiator Shop:
"Best place in town to take a leak."

And the best one for last.....:

Sign on the back of another Septic Tank Truck:
"Caution - This Truck is full of Political Promises.”

  • 1/2 cup whiskey
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degree F. Coat a Bundt pan with cooking spray.

  2. In a small bowl, combine raisins, pecans, and flour; mix until raisins and pecans are thoroughly coated then stir them into the cake batter.

  3. Pour batter into Bundt pan and bake 32 to 35 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

  4. In a small saucepan, combine butter, sugar, and whiskey, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat; let boil 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

National Watermelon Day recognizes the refreshing summertime treat enjoyed at picnics and fairs! Watermelon is 92% water, which is why it is so satisfying in the summer heat.
Watermelon is a vine-like flowering plant originally from southern Africa. Its fruit, which is also called watermelon, is a particular kind referred to by botanists as a pepo, a berry which has a thick rind (exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp). Pepos are derived from an inferior ovary and are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae. The watermelon fruit, loosely considered a type of melon – although not in the genus Cucumis – has a smooth exterior rind (usually green with dark green stripes or yellow spots) and a juicy, sweet interior flesh (usually deep red to pink, but sometimes orange, yellow, or white).
The fruit was likely first cultivated for its ability to hold plentiful water in a desert landscape, especially since the wild melon was bitter or tasteless.  Seeds and art found in tombs of Pharaohs furnish substantial evidence of the watermelon’s value. Cultivation and breeding brought out the better qualities of sweet and tender fruit we enjoy today.
Watermelons can grow enormous, and you will find competitions across the country which award prizes each year for the largest one.  The Guinness Book of World Records states that the heaviest watermelon weighed 262 pounds. To learn more refreshing watermelon facts, check out www.watermelon.org.

Oh, that food looks good.

Thank you for posting the drop off points for firefighters. A dear friend's cousin lost her husband in one of the California fires. Left behind a young family.

I didn't like Watermelon as a child- I sure do as an adult.

I like the whiskey cake- made with rum. Don't make it often- but it is always unforgettable.

Blessings to you

I'm so sorry for your friend's cousin! Heartbreaking. I'd make that cake, but then I'd eat it all myself! OINK!!! xo
