Weather ~ Popcorn History ~ Picture of the Day ~ Glazed Pork Loin ~ Schwans Order ~ National Moscato (Muscat) Day

Good 53º slightly cloudy morning.
Yesterday the clouds started coming in...

The temperatures stayed a bit cooler. By noon we were only at 70º. Then it got windy. By 1:45 the rain started....but unfortunately it only lasted 30 minutes.

Interesting about popcorn....

French explorers wrote of Iroquois popping tough corn kernels in pottery jars filled with heated sand. The Iroquois nation spread throughout the Great Lakes region, so it’s likely that settlers to upstate New York, Vermont and Quebec were the earliest European-American popcorn makers. By the mid-1800s, popcorn was beloved by families as a late-night snack in front of the fire, or at picnics and sociables. But mass consumption of the treat didn’t take off until the 1890s, after a Chicago entrepreneur named Charles Cretors built the first popcorn-popping machine.

Cretors was a candy-store owner who purchased a commercially made peanut roaster so he could offer freshly roasted nuts at his shop. But he was unhappy with the quality of the machine, and began tinkering with it. A few years later, Cretors had designed entirely new machines, powered by steam, for both nut roasting and popcorn popping. The steam ensured all kernels would be heated evenly, for the maximum number of popped kernels, and it also enabled users to pop the corn directly in the desired seasonings. By 1900, Cretors introduced a horse-drawn popcorn wagon, and the era of the popcorn eaters began.
We used to pop our corn in a pan on the stove...

Of course, the majority of Americans now get their popcorn from a microwave, not a horse and buggy or the stove. The first patent for a microwave popcorn bag was issued to General Mills in 1981, and home popcorn consumption increased by tens of thousands of pounds in the years following. Today, Americans eat about a million pounds worth of (unpopped) popcorn a year.
** I love my popcorn with lots of melted butter and grated cheese!

Picture of the Day....

Leon, our Schwans driver, arrived with my order.... just 20 minutes before the rain started.

I told him we had a "chance" of rain and he said he forgot to bring his umbrella!  😊😊😊😊
 My order:
Shrimp Spring Rolls with Sweet Thai Chili Sauce...
Key Lime Pie

Classic New York Cheesecake
This cheesecake is great, and all you have to do is take a couple slices, already sliced for you, and put them in the fridge to thaw. Leave the rest of the cheesecake in the freezer for when you want some more.
and Alaskan Salmon Fillets

All I know. Nuff said. Happy Hump Day. Ciao.

On May 9 raise your glass and toast National Moscato Day. Moscato, or Muscat in Italian, is one of the oldest known variety of grapes grown in the world.
The grape can be white to almost black and the flavor from sweet to dry. Because of this, it is quite versatile and is used to make everything from sparkling and dessert wines to dry and floral wines. Where one Moscato may pair well with a steak, another will go well with fresh fruit and a sharp cheese plate.
In February 2012, it was reported that Moscato wine became the third most popular white wine consumed within the United States.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Prepare a nice plate of fresh cheeses, grab a bottle of your favorite Moscato, and pour a glass to enjoy the day.
HISTORY
National Moscato Day was created in 2012 by the Gallo Family Vineyards.  The Gallo Family Vineyards is a family-owned business that has been in operation since 1933.  For more information on National Moscato Day visit Moscato Day.
