Storm/Tree Down Smilebox of Pictures ~ Garbage Pasta Salad ~ John Wayne ~ Blueberry Cheesecake Day

Good Saturday afternoon....
Pretty day for awhile.... stayed cool so far....

Yesterday was supposed to be haircut day, blood draw, post office for package, pharmacy for prescription. BUT, since there was no power since 5:30 pm Thursday until 5:00 pm yesterday, Friday, I stayed home and kept the generator running to keep the fridge and freezer working and my coffee pot!
Here is the Smilebox of the photos from the storm and the tree down. When the storm started there was lots of thunder, shook the house! And lightening, but I never got a picture of it. Dang. Then the winds were wild and the rain came down like crazy. In 25 minutes we got 2" of rain! Suddenly my big oak tree in front of the house blew over. Shock! Fortunately it didn't hit anything. Then the power went out, caused by many trees down on the road hitting the wires.
Tree people were out Thursday night and Friday working on the downed trees and trimming others away from the wires. The power company was working on the power poles. Mike Hannan came over and started working on the downed tree. Finally the power guys, Mike (another Mike!) and Gary were here and getting the wires back up and power came on at 5pm. YEAH!!!!

Quick! - Check the pantry and the fridge and grab whatever you've got on hand, 'cause you're going to need it to make a throw-together Garbage Pasta Salad that's potluck-worthy! This is one easy pasta salad that won't ever make it to the garbage.

  • 1 (12-ounce) package twist rainbow pasta
  • 1/2 head fresh cauliflower, cut into small florets
  • 1/2 head fresh broccoli, cut into small florets
  • 1/2 red onion, cut into 1/2-inch chunks
  • 1 cup 1/2-inch chunks Cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup pepperoni slices, cut in half
  • 1 (16-ounce) can black olives, drained
  • 3/4 cup Italian dressing
  1. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta according to package directions; drain and let cool.

  2. In a large bowl, combine remaining ingredients; add pasta and toss until evenly coated. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

  • This pasta salad is great made in advance, but you may need to add a little extra Italian dressing to moisten it just before serving.

Special birthday today.... John Wayne. A hero to so many. His birth name was Morrison and my family is distantly related on the Scottish side of my family. My sister's name was Marion!  He was a hero to Jerry's family too, as his mother named him John Wayne Maxwell, but his father said that wouldn't work, so they changed his name to Jerry Wayne Maxwell!!

Cheesecakes can be prepared baked or unbaked and are often served topped with fruit, chocolate or whipped cream.  There are many varieties of cheesecake. However, this day honors the blueberry cheesecake.
