Friday the 13th ~ Dude ~ USN Birthday ~ Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie ~ Picture on the News Again

OMGOSH... Friday the 13th !!!

Good 43º very cloudy morning. What a difference from yesterday at 28º!!  We didn't warm up any more that the high 60ºs.

Yesterday I took Dude into the Southern Oregon Veterinary Center for his check up on his stitches.

Dr. Fugazzi took out the stitches and left in the staples. I will have to take him back next week. There is a slight infection, so he got more pills!

In the lobby there was a gentleman with a WWII Veteran hat on

so I shook his hand and thanked him for his service.

I had a little conversation with he and his wife. He is 93 years old and was in the Army Air Corps. Nice people! And in fact, they always go to the same vet, Dr. Dickey in Rogue River that I go to. But, had an emergency with one of their cats so were at the Vet Emergency.

Today is the birthday of the US Navy. All you squids... HAPPY NAVY BIRTHDAY!!!

Since Halloween is just around the corner and then followed by Thanksgiving... how about a Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie!  OMGOOOOD!!

  • 1 refrigerated pie crust (or make your own)
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs, divided
  • 1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin pie filling
  • 1 (5-ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Unroll pie crust and place in a 9-inch pie plate, pressing crust firmly into pie plate and fluting edges.
  2. In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla. Beat in 1 egg just until mixed. Spread into pie crust and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat pie filling, remaining egg, and evaporated milk. Pour pumpkin mixture very slowly over cream cheese mixture.
  4. Bake 60 to 65 minutes, or until center is set; let cool.
  5. In a medium bowl, beat heavy cream, maple syrup, and confectioners' sugar until stiff. When ready to serve, top each pie slice with a dollop of maple whipped cream.

October 13th
Date When Celebrated : Occurs one to three times a year, when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday
2017: January, October
2018: April, July
2019: September, December
2020: March, November
Are you superstitious? Then, Friday the 13th is a day you may look forward to with fear! Friday the 13th, is an unlucky day, a day when bad things can happen. Whatever you do, don't walk under a ladder, and don't let a black cat cross your path on this day.
Throughout most of recorded history, the number 13 has been seen as an unlucky number. If you live in fear of the number 13, you suffer from Triskaidekaphobia. More phobias of interest.
Historically, and perhaps a bit oddly in today's world, Friday has been viewed as an unlucky day of the week. We find this hard to fathom. After all, Friday is TGIF!! However, in days gone by, when you put the unlucky day of Friday, together with the unlucky #13, many people believe only bad things can happen.
Interestingly, there is a sizable number of optimists, who embrace Friday the 13th and the number 13. They shrug off the superstition and go buy lottery tickets with the number 13 in it.
For many who never gave it a thought, Jason in the movie "Friday, the 13th" (1980) made believers in the fearfulness of this day.
Friday the 13th Trivia:
Many buildings and skyscrapers do not have a 13th floor.
Many people will not allow 13 people at the table. If there is exactly 13 people present, a second table is set up.
Skippers would not go out to sea with a crew of 12. Including the captain, that made 13 people.
Ancient Mayans of Central America were the most advanced culture in all of the Americas. They considered the number 13 sacred.
Like any other special or wacky day, we encourage you to fully embrace the day and have fun with it. But, don't cower in your room in fear of this day. You'd miss all of the fun and excitement!
