Daddy ~ Nancy P ~ Colcannon ~ Chicken/Vegetable Soup ~ Heaven/Keeper/Bridey/Sugar Fox ~ Jennifer-Mike-Dr. G ~ Goose

Good 48º foggy morning.

Today there are two special birthdays....
My Daddy, Leslie Laney, was born on March 16, 1901.  He passed away in 1991. He served our country in the US Navy in WWI (lied about his age and was only 16) He also worked for the US Marshall's office and for Borden Dairy and then retired after working for the US Postal Service at the Los Angeles Terminal Annex as an "engineer". He was in charge of the air conditioning maintenance for the building and keeping the air fresh. Daddy Navy, Mom Daddy and me....

Smokin' a cigar on Christmas! Can't remember him doing that. He quit. Thank goodness!  And Daddy and I on the ferry going to Vancouver...

At Mom and Daddy's house with (back row) Jerry, Jimmy (Marion's son) Marion, me, and Brian. Middle with MaryAnn (oldest sister Betty's daughter) & her son Daniel and  Kristen, Mom, Daddy, Bobby (Marion's son).  Daddy and Mom always dressed classy!!!

The other birthday today is my pal, Nancy Perry. She is one of our SOW Sistas. (Southern Oregon Winos).. Nancy is shy when it comes to having her picture taken, but I got her in this one! We were having a SOW Sista lunch... Nancy is on the left... 3rd from the left. HAPPY BIRTHDAY NANCY!! Lunch with you on Friday!!!!

I like to make this dish to go with my corned beef. This is called Colcannon. A traditional Irish side dish..... made by an Irish lass... so much better than just boiled potatoes and boiled cabbage!
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht9mtu1ov8MS-kpSb7Iuqv-zYZE4gf7LoaGv5lvvrsiNs6j4dkSNY9KLZs0bZHD5lovq8P6XZqJ3e3LtP2UIVoCoskQh-lZH2aHoYLfmtvMYAAN0oJh_BdDdc-GsqdOix0Lbd74CuiQO0/s1600/colcannon_fullMA28963905-0013.jpg

4-5 russet potatoes (depending on size)
1/2 large head of cabbage
butter, milk, salt, pepper
Heat a frying pan with a bit of oil and saute the shredded cabbage until wilted. In the mean time peel, dice, and cook the potatoes for about 8 minutes, until soft. Mash with milk and butter, salt and pepper. Mix cabbage and mashed potatoes together and keep warm until serving.
You can also chop some green onions and/or chives and add to the dish and/or cooked crumbled bacon. Leeks can be chopped and cooked with the cabbage.

I made soup from the re-hydrated vegetables I saved. Added them into the Crock*Pot along with two cans of sliced mushrooms (juice and all) and a can of Costco chicken (juice and all), a half cup of the dehydrated green beans, and a quart of chicken broth.

I heated it up for about 2 hours on low. Then poured a cup for me and saved the rest in a couple canning jars...

Just perfect! Low in calories, lots of veggies (carrots, onion, tomatoes, peas, celery, green bell peppers, parsley, and green beans. I didn't add any spices and no salt. AND no pasta!! ( boo hoo ) But, this way much healthier and really good!

Then the rain came again. Saturday we got 1".. yesterday we got 1¼. Wow, over 2". YES~!!!

I went over to Jennifer's yesterday afternoon. Her dogs are always so sweet and her cat Bridey.... Heaven (white Guardian dog) Keeper (Australian Shepherd) and Bridey...

She had all the ingredients and a recipe out for a chocolate cheesecake. She wanted me to help, but when I got there Mike had already made the cheesecake. We tried it.
OMGOOOOOOD!!! We had wine and chatted. Dr. G came by to give Keeper some meds for his back leg that is giving him a lot of pain. And he took a look at Sugar Fox's back feet that have a problem. Sugar Fox is the American Indian dog she got last October from Song Dog Kennels.
                                              She's grown a lot!

Dr. G is so nice and very funny! Great to have a vet that will make house calls!!!
Like you say Miss Bonnie, East Indian people are sooooo nice and kind and friendly! Hey Dr. G! Glad I got to meet you!

On my way home, with no cars behind me, I stopped on Robertson Bridge to get a picture of what was nesting on top. Before it's been an Osprey, now it appears to be Mrs. Canadian Goose!

All I know. Nuff said. Happy Monday. Ciao.

March 16th
Freedom Of Information Day

Freedom of Information Day celebrates and recognizes a valuable concept in American rights.
March 16th is the birth date of James Madison, the 4th president of the United States of America. James Madison is recognized as the "Father of the Constitution", and the chief author of the "Bill of Rights". Freedom of information and individual rights was very important to James Madison.
Did you Know? The Freedom of Information Act was passed into law in 1966. It opened up a wealth of information to American citizens. James Madison would be very pleased!

I am chuckling that you were able to get two dogs abd a cat in the same photo. That's quite a feat! :)

Oh yes, I have a good many East Indian friends and they are wonderful people. Conservatives!

I always enjoy seeing that photo of your young dad as a sailor. I have told you every time that you have his eyes. Then later as I see photos of your mom you look soooo much like her.

I, too, make colcannon but only after we tire of the hunks of cabbage and potatoes. Then I make colcannon to be different. Pretty sure Matthew would like that.

XO Trisha

Those dogs and that cat are all pals. Bridey is so sweet, but stands her ground when she has to!

I guess I'm a product of both my parents. Mom was a good cook, Daddy liked to eat!!! LOL.
