Good Morning, Sue.....
Thanks for thinking about
us.
Thank you for your concern about our well being
yesterday.
Yes, it was a scary day here in Huntley. We had rain
on
Saturday, and we got fair warning of T-storms and
possible
tornados for Sunday. The predictions were right
on.
Early Sunday morning the most peculiar T-storm woke
us,
and lasted about 45 minutes. The lightning was like thousands
of flash bulbs going off at a celebrity event. The thunder
sounded like a snare drummer hitting his sticks on a bass
drum. It was wild. And, of course, the clouds opened up;
rain crashed onto our roof. The wind blew constantly, and
changed directions frequently, creating a swirling effect.
Becky put together an 'emergency box' with most everything
we would need while hunkering down
in the basement. Our weather radios and TVs were
broadcasting constantly, as the clouds were moving very
fast... 40-60 mph. gusts of wind slammed the
house.

Do you remember Kate Smith? Unless you are my age you probably
don't or never heard of her. Frank Sinatra considered Kate the best singer of
her time and said when he and a million other guys first heard her sing God
Bless America on the radio, they all pretended to have dust in their eyes as
they wiped away a tear or two. The time of this video is 1940. America was in a
terrible economic depression. Hitler was taking over Europe and Americans were
afraid we'd have to go to war. This was before TV, when radio shows were HUGE,
and American families sat around their radios in the evenings, listening to
their favorite entertainers. Kate Smith was top of the list! Kate was also
large, a plus size as we now say, and the popular phrase sill used today is in
deference to her, "It ain't over till the fat lady sings." Kate was also
patriotic. She was hurt to see Americans depressed and afraid of what the next
day would bring. She wanted to do something to cheer them up, so she went to
famous American song-writer, Irving Berlin (who also wrote White Christmas) and
asked him to write a song that would make Americans feel good again about their
country. When she described what she was looking for he went to his files and
found a song he had written but never published 22 years previous in 1917. He
gave it to her and she worked on it with her studio orchestra. They both agreed
if the song was well received they wouldn't take any of the profits and would
donate them to the Boy Scouts of America. The video starts with Kate in the
studio singing and after a couple of verses the scenes are shown from the 1940
movie, "You're In The Army Now". At the 4:20 mark you see a young actor in the
movie reading an issue of Variety... it's RONALD REAGAN~ It certainly stirred my
patriotic feelings. I turned up the volume and sang along, with tears
streaming..... Most of us don't/didn't know there's a lead in to the song.. so
here's the entire song as originally sung.
Thank you Marie Vincent for sharing this!
As for history and special birthdays... go here... a year ago

Dinner was leftovers (ravioli with veggie stir-fry) ...

All I know. Happy Tuesday. Par-tay at Ace today for Ace Dave's
farewell (retiring) and his birthday. UPS Dave dropped off a package here
yesterday while I was gone. He left two dog cookies on top for Dude. I'm sure
Dude was sad he couldn't go out and greet his dad. Dog drool on the glass door!!
He gobbled up the cookies when I got home. Nuff said. Ciao.

Yes, that song just swells your pride! So glad for Greg and Becky. So sad for all those who lost everything. Can't imaging that tragedy. xo
John said to me last night, "Sue's not going to be happy tomorrow!" I said WHY? Then he told me your Patriots lost.
Sorry gf.
One of my Parnell sisters posted that her hubby went to Stanford and son to USC and they all watched that game together. Lots of screaming and yelling and were afraid of scaring the grandbabies. lol
Hugs and I am off to the dentist! :(
