Maggie-Dude-Brian ~ Cowboy Hat ~ Van de Kamps ~ Zucchini Bread

Good 52º another one of those mornings. Never hit 100º yesterday. Supposed to keep the triple digits all week..... we'll see. Gotta mow so will do that first thing..

Yesterday morning Maggie and I accompanied Dude on his run... took trash to the trash can and got the paper...

We turned around and there was Brian. He came over to go through some of the stuff in the barn...
I found a hat worn by Bruce Boxleitner down there... The tag says MGM 1984 with Bruce's name ...

Yes, a tad dirty.... will clean it up. Here is a picture I found of Bruce.. looks like the hat ...

My friend Dale Yellin (LASD ret...SEB Motors) is so kind and thoughtful to care about me. He sent the following... it is supposed to help...  I hope it helps you too....

PICTURE of the day.........
Huntington Drive & Chelsea Rd (just west of St. Albans) San Marino ... mid 1960's. Van de Kamp's Holland Dutch Bakeries was a bakery founded in 1915 and headquartered in the Van de Kamp Bakery Building in Los Angeles. The company's trademark blue windmills featured on their grocery store signs and atop their chain of famous restaurants that were known throughout the region. The bakery was sold by the Van de Kamp family and acquired by General Baking Co. in 1956. The company was sold to private investors in 1979, and closed in bankruptcy in 1990. Former Los Angeles County District Attorney John Van de Kamp (D) is a grandson of the baker's founder. The family also founded Lawry's Restaurants and the Tam O'Shanter Inn . The Van de Kamp's brand is now owned by Ralphs supermarket chain and used for their line of private-label baked goods.

I made zucchini bread yesterday...
An old recipe I have used a number of times before.
2 eggs slightly beaten
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
3 t. vanilla
2 cups grated zucchini (skin too)
3 cups flour
3 t. cinnamon
1 t. salt
1 t. baking soda
1/2 t. baking powder
1 cup chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 350º. Cooking spray in two loaf pans. Whisk eggs, sugar, vegetable oil, and vanilla in bowl. Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in separate bowl. Mix dry ingredients into first bowl containing egg mixture. Stir in zucchini. Stir in nuts. Divide between two loaf pans. Bake one hour. Let set 10 minutes then remove from pans and cool on wire rack.

I started snacking on the bread and was too full for dinner! GOOD STUFF!!! Mmmmmm cinnamon heaven!
All I know. Happy Sunday. Nuff said. Ciao.

National Junk Food Day

To some people, every day is Junk Food Day. For the rest of us, National Junk Food Day is an opportunity to guiltlessly eat your favorite junk food.
Dietitians will tell you that junk food is any food that contains little nutritional value. We also include foods that are high in salts, fats, and sugars. In other words, junk food is all that tasty stuff that the dietitians, and Mom, consider to be bad for us.
On Junk Food Day, you get to eat anything you want. Eat any amounts that you want, too. Tomorrow, however, it's back to a healthy diet.

Great pic of the windmill.
Van de Kamps was great. My parents took Harriett and me often
to the main one on Fletcher Dr. I always ordered the hot roast beef
sandwich, finished off with a slice of boysenberry pie. I still love
that combo. The supermarkets used to carry more of various
VdK items... like white/coconut cake....YUM. Mostly just doughnuts
now, but they're still good. Greg

Sue, that link didn't work for me. It said "This page is not available because you need some fresh air" or something like that! What?? lol

Ohhh I love junk food! Don't know why pizza is considered junk food. I see my favorite thing in the picture of chips. Mrs. Vickie's Jalapeno Potato Chips! :) I always buy two bags when I go to Subway!

Loved seeing the photo of the hat and him wearing it! Eager to see how you will display it. You own another famous hat, don't you?

Good looking bread!!

XO Trisha

I remember Van De Kamp bakeries and I remember this building in particular. There was a Van de Kamp bakery in the Market Basket market when I was a little girl. Pop would always buy some goodies there. The ladies wore hats similar to the flying nun. They made this incredible yellow gold cake with rich dark chocolate icing and a softer whipped chocolate filling. Oh the memories. Thanks for putting in that picture. Marie
