Grass ~ Goose ~ Grackle ~ Friends

Good 40º morning. When I got up at 6 it was 35º and there was ice on the barn roof. Summit is fogged in. Hopefully sun today and I can mow!

Here is my "hip deep to a tall Indian" grass...

So sad to hear Annette has died. She was one of my favorites.

Lots of famous people have died this year already....
Margaret Thatcher, Roger Ebert, Bonnie Franklin, Hugo Chavez, Ed Koch, Huell Howser, Patti Page...... and a department friend, Rocky Fortner, just passed away. A large number of our old friends from LASD have died this year already ... sad.

Yesterday I heard a goose honking...somewhere in the front yard, but didn't see him. So took some corn and went out...there he was on top of the tree we had topped...

He must be the one who would sit on the cross bar of the telephone pole..... Anyway, he and his mate came down for the corn....

A Grackle has built a nest under the eve off the front porch.
They are notorious for taking over other bird's nests and they steal food from other birds also. I never saw them up here until a few years ago. I would always see them at rest stops along I-5 in California. They eat anything.... and I guess the rest stops were good as folks would leave food trash all over! I see them here in parking lots, scavenging for food. Anyway, here is 'Baby Grackle' sitting on my garden arbor... waiting for mom to come back and feed it....

Historically this date....
1959Project Mercury: NASA announces the selection of the United States' first seven astronauts, whom the news media quickly dub the "Mercury Seven".

1961 – The Pacific Electric Railway in Los Angeles, once the largest electric railway in the world, ends operations.

1980 – The Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein kills philosopher Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr and his sister Bint al-Huda after three days of torture.

...He's just strange...and she's weird!

And births this date include....
1903Ward Bond, American actor (d. 1960)

1942Brandon deWilde, American actor (d. 1972)

1954Dennis Quaid, American actor

So, yesterday was interesting. Our friend Willie, former bartender at the Elk's Lodge for YEARS and YEARS, not working anymore, so the plan was to meet up with him at Shenanigans for a drink.

He was a no show. Dee had to work so it was Jeannie, Bill, Dale, and me. Dale had Sami, his black lab, in his truck and Bill had Chaka, his chocolate lab in his truck... so I sneaked them both dog cookies!!! Came home, fixed dinner, and watched the recorded Country Music Awards. Geeze Louise, George Strait isn't supposed to get old!!!

All I know. Nuff said. Happy Tuesday. Ciao.

Very unusual for this bird (Grackle) to be here. They are mostly in the eastern U.S. I would advise getting rid of the nest as this bird is considered a pest. Brown headed Cowbirds are also parasitic nesters. Gary

Gary, I like the Grackles. They are interesting. I have hanging bird feeders, which are not their favorite, so they don't eat from them. This is only one family. I would have thought it was a common black bird, but it's young is just exactly like a Grackle. Maybe the weather farther east has brought them here. As for being a pest, doesn't bother me.

Geese honk.
George Straight played in honky-tonks. Good day for honkers.
