Wimer Covered Bridge ~ Fall ~ Candy Corn-tini ~ Candy Corn Cookies

Good 66º foggy (again) morning. Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day. I hope today is the same.

10-30 is radio code for "does not conform to regulations" ... As in Jerry's buddy Steve aka 1030 Dude!!!

Historically this date....
1938Orson Welles broadcasts his radio play of H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds, causing anxiety in some of the audience in the United States.

1965Vietnam War: Just miles from Da Nang, United States Marines repel an intense attack by wave after wave of Viet Cong forces, killing 56 guerrillas. Among the dead, a sketch of Marine positions is found on the body of a 13-year-old Vietnamese boy who sold drinks to the Marines the day before.

1985Space Shuttle Challenger lifts off for mission STS-61-A, its final successful mission.

And births this date include...

1893Charles Atlas, Italian-born bodybuilder (d. 1972)
Charles in his youth and at 79 years old.

1945Henry Winkler, American actor

1946Robert L. Gibson, American astronaut

1951Harry Hamlin, American actor

Interesting...
Hamlin’s first book is entitled Full Frontal Nudity and is an uproarious memoir about growing up in 1960s suburban California in a regular American family. His mother, a housewife, who frequently indulged in one too many martinis and his father, a rocket scientist, gifted their 11-year-old son with a five-year subscription to Playboy for Christmas.
When Hamlin arrived at Berkeley in the fall of 1969, he was ready to fully immerse himself in architecture, but fate got in the way and ultimately he was expelled only to end up a graduate of Yale, a Rhodes scholar, and the lead in a little play called Equus, which required full frontal nudity.

Yesterday Pat T and I met with the Rogue Rural Fire District Chief Bill up in Wimer. Wimer is famous for their covered bridge....

This bridge fell down in July 2003. Brian and Jen had just ridden his motorcycle across the bridge the day before and it collapsed with a grandfather and his grandsons on the bridge. Fortunately a man in his vehicle had just crossed the bridge and saved the grandfather and the boys. My friend Pat was on the re-building committee to restore the bridge. So, she knows all the people in Wimer!

We discussed the "unofficial" ballot drop at the fire station. They are putting that on the marquee in front and Chief Fuller will call me when they get ballots. I will transport them to the "official" ballot drop in Rogue River. All of this is OK'd with the love and affection of our Jackson County Clerk, Chris Walker!

Then I came back to RR and to the market for cake mix to make my Halloween cupcakes. It is truly fall here .....

Forty five years ago today (ugh.... has it really been that long????) I had a 'routine' doc appointment because I was pregnant. The doc said my baby was breech and a few other complications and I needed to have a caesarian delivery and to meet him at the hospital the next morning at 6am. WHAT??? TOMORAROW IS HALLOWEEN!!!

Yes sir, I'll be there.

All I know. Cupcake day here. Happy Tuesday. Ciao.

October 30th
National Candy Corn Day

LOL, last year I made a candy corn martini.
For the infused vodka:
1/2 cup candy corn
1 1/2 cups vodka

For the cordials:
2 ounces orange liqueur

Juice of 1/2 lemon

1 large egg white

Candy corn, for garnish

Infuse the vodka: Combine the candy corn and vodka in an airtight container; set aside for at least 3 hours, then strain.

Make the cordials: Add 4 ounces of the candy corn vodka, the orange liqueur, lemon juice and egg white to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds. Strain into 2 chilled martini glasses and garnish with candy corn.

It was really sweet, so if you like sweet, you will like it. I'll stick with the regular 'tinis', thank you. This is my Brian's favorite candy. Hope you have some on hand Bri! xo

.....or how about Chocolate Chip and Candy Corn Cookies:

So are you saying that Brian was born on Halloween? I sure wish my doc had discovered ahead of time that Eric was breech! No C-section for me! Just the normal way and I still shudder when I remember that delivery!!

What an interesting story about that bridge. WOW! Me thinks the brides should be inspected routenly. Glad the grandpa and boys were rescued.

LOVE the color of the autum trees up there! With those trees and the covered bridge you would think it was Vermont! :)

Hugs, Trisha
