♥ Friends ♥ ~ Baby Turkeys ~ Root Beer Float Cake

Good 47º crispy cool clear morning.

Yesterday we had a few clouds  . ..

We topped out at about 88º, and the humidity stayed up there at 35%. ICK. I didn't mow. I know, I know. There was a doe laying under the trampoline and I didn't want to disturb her. (Jeannie said that was the BEST excuse!) I steamed my kitchen floor instead and vacuumed.  Big whoop excitement.

Baby turkeys were out and about yesterday........

♥Friends♥ are awesome, especially when they take good care of you. The other day when we (Jeannie, Joe, JoAnn, Bob, Billy, & I) were testing the limits of afternoon wine in the Elks Lodge bar ...  and thoroughly enjoying the stories and the laughter ... Jeannie, the consummate wino, finishes her wine and 'smartly' sets her glass at the edge of the bar. IMMEDIATELY the bartendress (Dawn) rushes over and refills her glass. I though, very cool. So I tried it.

APPARENTLY.............. I set my glass down TOO smartly!
.............and my "friends" captured the following for everyone's enjoyment!

Sigh..... Jeannie and JoAnn I owe you a box of wine!   :o)

Ok, here's a funny from my friend Joe (JoAnn's hubby)...

DO you know what happened 160 years ago this fall .. back in 1850?
California became a state.
The people had no electricity.
The state had no money.
Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
There were gunfights in the streets.
So, basically nothing has changed except the women had real tits and the men didn't hold hands.
Ba dum bump baaa (Joe always does this drum thing! )..... That my friends is your history lesson for today.

This is my story and I'm stickin' to it...

Historically this date....

1926 – Harry Houdini performs his greatest feat, spending 91 minutes underwater in a sealed tank before escaping.
1990Gulf War: the United Nations Security Council orders a global trade embargo against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.

And births this date include.....
1881Leo Carrillo, American actor (d. 1961)

... was Pancho on The Cisco Kid from 1950-1955. A big favorite of mine!!!
1881 – Louella Parsons, American gossip columnist (d. 1972)
The lady who dropped the dimes on Hollywood in the 50's and 60's.

1902Dutch Schultz, American organized crime figure (d. 1935)

1911Lucille Ball, American actress (d. 1989)

1917Robert Mitchum, American actor (d. 1997)

Imagine... a Hollywood miracle, he stayed married for 57 years, until his death, to the same woman!

1928 – Andy Warhol, American artist (d. 1987)
His pop art never impressed me. Over the top odd man!

Today is the Grants Pass Grower's Market and I'm going. Will meet Jeannie and Bill and probably Brian and family. Yeah!
All I know. Nuff said. This turned out to be a wino blog! LOL

August 6th
National Root Beer Float Day

or.............how about a Root Beer Float Cake...

2 cups root beer (don't use diet)
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 stick butter, cut into pieces
1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
½ cup brown sugar
2 cups all purpose flour
1¼ t. baking soda
1 t. kosher salt
2 T root beer liquor (or use coffee liquor or Tía Maria or ... some sweet liquor..)
2 lg eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 cup root beer (save for later)
Sauce:
2½ cups cold root beer
2 t. cornstarch
Preheat oven to 325º. Butter and flour (or Pam) a Bundt pan. In medium sauce pan combine root beer, cocoa powder, and butter. Heat and whisk until butter is melted and mixture combined. Add the granulated and brown sugars and whisk until dissolved. Remove from heat and cool.
Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. Whisk in the beaten eggs and liquor into the cooled root beer mixture until combined. Pour the root beer mixture into the flour mixture and fold together until mixed, some lumps are ok. Pour into pan and bake 40-45 min, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean (or use a thin steak knife). Cake should spring back when touched. Remove from oven, let sit 10 minutes, then invert onto cooling rack. Then, using a skewer or chopstick, poke a bunch of holes in the top of the cake half way through. With a pastry brush, brush on the 1/4 cup of root beer, until cake is well saturated.
Combine the 2 ½ cups of root beer in a sauce pan with the cornstarch and whisk to dissolve the cornstarch. On med/high heat reduce mixture by half, 20-30 min, and whisk frequently. Sauce should be thick and syrupy. Serve immediately on each piece of cake with lots of vanilla ice cream.

good blog today, Sue.... wine glass incident was pretty funny.

don't know about a cucumber martini.... do you have a
recipe for it?
The shrimp dish got our attention... think we'll modify it
a bit with sauted garlic, artichoke hearts, mushrooms,
asparagus... over angel hair pasta. We'll let you know how
it turns out.

glad to know you're having lots of fun with your friends.

Your Friends,
Greg & Becky

Thanks Greg!! Appreciate comments.
I take a cuke, cut it up, put in food processor with a little vodka, and puree it. Then I let it sit and strain, add about 2oz vodka to it and a half lemon squeezed, shake it with ice, and strain into cold cold glass. Slice of cuke for garnish.

Sue,
Funny blog today! Love the wino part! Glad I am not the only one who thinks boxed wine is pretty good for "every day wine"! Bobo? Was there a little Photo Shop involved? teehee

Read an interesting piece on Lucy on the AOL Welcome page. It said she spent two decades trying to get into the big time and didn't succeed until "I Love Lucy". Then she reached super stardom! Yes, I loved Lucy! I could never bring myself to watch her different sitcoms after she and Desi split. It was so sad.
Have fun while you are out and about today!
XO Trisha
